DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke men’s tennis team closed the 2012-13 season listed seventh in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) team rankings. The No. 7 final ranking is the highest listing by a Blue Devils squad since the 2006 team was listed sixth at the end of the season and the second consecutive season the squad has concluded the season ranked inside the top 10.

Duke concluded the 2012-13 campaign with an overall 25-6 mark, including a 9-1 ledger in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. The squad finished in second place in the ACC regular season standings and posted the first undefeated home record since the 2000-01 campaign at 15-0. Senior Henrique Cunha was named ACC Player of the Year for the second time in his career and was named All-ACC for the fourth straight season, while junior Fred Saba and freshman Michael Redlicki garnered All-ACC honors for the first time in their respective careers.

The Blue Devils made their 22nd consecutive appearance in the NCAA Championship and received the No. 9 overall seed. Head coach Ramsey Smith’s squad was selected to host an NCAA Regional for the fourth consecutive season, defeating Coastal Carolina and UNC Wilmington in the first and second rounds to advance to the NCAA Round of 16 in Urbana, Ill.

In the Round of 16, the Blue Devils notched a 4-2 victory over eighth-seeded Kentucky to reach the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.

The Blue Devils were well represented in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, with five players earning bids into the competition. Cunha earned the No. 8 overall seed in singles and reached the quarterfinals before falling in three-sets to eventual champion Blaz Rola of Ohio State. He achieved All-American status in singles for the fourth time in his illustrious career and closed his Duke career with 151 career wins in singles, which stands as a program record. Saba and Redlicki also represented Duke in the singles portion, with Redlicki advancing to the Round of 32.

Named as the No. 2 seed, Cunha and sophomore Raphael Hemmeler became the third Duke duo to reach the semifinals in the doubles draw of 32 teams. Cunha and Hemmeler closed the season with 39 wins, which sit in second place on the program’s charts for wins in a single season. Cunha received All-American status in doubles for the third time in his career, while Hemmeler receives the first All-American honor of his career. Redlicki and sophomore Jason Tahir gave top-seed Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese of Tennessee all they could handle in the Round of 32, before falling in three sets.

Cunha became the second player to receive the Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership National Award, joining current assistant coach Jonathan Stokke (2006) as the lone recipients in the program’s history.

Stokke was tabbed as the ITA Carolina Region Assistant Coach of the Year and Cunha became the fourth player in program history to be named 2013 ITA Regional Senior Player of the Year, as well as the third to receive the ITA Regional Arthur Ashe Sportsmanship and Leadership Award. In addition, Redlicki was named 2013 Carolina Region Rookie of the Year.

The final ITA rankings will be announced for singles and doubles Wednesday, June 5.
