DURHAM, N.C. – The 10th-ranked Duke men’s tennis team (7-3) kicks off its ACC slate Sunday afternoon at nearby NC State.

NC State Series History
The Blue Devils will face the Wolfpack for the 101st time in program history Sunday with Duke leading the series, 98-2 … Duke is 12-1 all-time when facing NC State in Raleigh … The Blue Devils have won 29 consecutive meetings with the Wolfpack dating back to the 1986 season.

Last Time We Met
Duke concluded the 2013 regular season with a 7-0 sweep of NC State Apr. 21, 2013 at Ambler Tennis Stadium … 2013 graduate Henrique Cunha earned a win in doubles and turned in one of the top performances of his career in singles to help the Blue Devils secure an undefeated home regular season record at 13-0 … Fred Saba and Chris Mengel sealed the doubles point with an 8-5 victory over the Wolfpack’s Beck Bond and Austin Powell at the No. 3 spot … Cunha overwhelmed Robbie Mudge of NC State, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 1 match to finish the regular season with a 16-0 mark in singles.  

Scouting the Wolfpack
Coming off of a 12-day break, 19th-ranked NC State (11-2) swept Appalachian State (7-0) and Winthrop (4-0) in a doubleheader Friday … The No. 19 ranking in the latest ITA poll matches the Wolfpack’s highest ranking in program history … NC State’s lineup includes three nationally-ranked singles players in No. 45 Austin Powell, No. 91 Robbie Mudge and No. 122 Thomas Weigel … Weigel is 4-1 from the No. 1 position while Powell has gone 4-2 at the top spot and 3-0 in the No. 2 slot … The Wolfpack also features two ranked doubles tandems in No. 32 Nick Horton and Sean Weber and No. 42 Ian Dempster and Mudge … Dempster and Mudge have combined for a 5-0 ledger at the No. 1 doubles spot while Horton and Weber have gone 4-2 at the same position.

Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke moved to 7-3 on the year with a 4-0 victory at then-No. 29 VCU March 2 in Richmond, Va. … Sophomore Michael Redlicki, the 37th-ranked singles player in the ITA poll, leads the team from the No. 1 position with a 4-1 dual match ledger and has won four consecutive matches heading into the contest Sunday at NC State … No. 40 Jason Tahir has compiled a 7-2 record this spring while No. 58 Fred Saba has gone 5-2 at the No. 2 and 3 positions in the lineup … Sophomore Bruno Semenzato, who is tied at 94th on the ITA singles list, is 5-1 from the No. 4 slot … Redlicki and Tahir combine to form the nation’s 33rd-ranked doubles pair and have teamed up to go 3-2 in dual matches.

Duke vs. the ACC
The Blue Devils are 318-130 all-time in regular season ACC matches … Duke went 9-1 against ACC competition in 2013 and will kick off its 2014 conference slate Sunday at NC State.  

Last Time Out
The Blue Devils picked up their third win over a top-40 opponent with a 4-0 decision against No. 29 VCU March 2 in Richmond, Va. … Duke started off the contest by claiming the doubles point for the third-straight outing … Sophomore Daniel McCall and redshirt junior Cale Hammond secured a 1-0 lead in the match with an 8-5 victory over the Rams’ Alejandro Argente and JB Mateo at the No. 3 spot in doubles … Junior Jason Tahir and sophomore Michael Redlicki contributed wins from courts two and one in singles before sophomore Bruno Semenzato clinched the match with a 7-6 (3), 6-2 defeat of Mateo in the No. 4 contest.

Win Streaks in Singles
Junior Jason Tahir has won seven consecutive matches in singles heading into the matchup with the Wolfpack … Freshman TJ Pura has notched seven straight wins dating back to the fall after posting his first victory in dual match play against Illinois (Jan. 31) … Sophomore Michael Redlicki has logged four consecutive wins from the No. 1 singles position, including straight-sets victories over No. 34 Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee (Feb. 7) and No. 67 Philippe Tsangaridis of Coastal Carolina (Feb. 27) … As a team, Duke is 40-14 in dual match singles contests this season for a .741 win percentage.

Smith’s Take
“One of our big goals is to do well and position ourselves well in the ACC regular season for the tournament,” said head coach Ramsey Smith. “We’re starting off with a tough opponent on the road. NC State is very deep - the difference between their 1 and 4 and 5 isn't very much. They also play very good doubles."
