DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University junior Raphael Hemmeler has been selected the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Carolina Region’s recipient of the Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, as announced by the organization Tuesday, May 13.

Named for legendary tennis champion Arthur Ashe, Jr., the collegiate award’s purpose is to honor Ashe and the vision he embodied of the importance of education, sportsmanship and leadership. The accolade is awarded to the player in each region who best demonstrates leadership qualities on the court and in the community, as well as the player who shows the highest level of sportsmanship in matches throughout the season.

A native of Zurich, Switzerland, Hemmeler becomes the fourth Blue Devil to win the ITA Carolina Region Arthur Ashe, Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, joining Duke head coach Ramsey Smith (2000 and 2001), assistant coach Jonathan Stokke (2006) and 2013 graduate Henrique Cunha (2013).

Hemmeler compiled season records of 20-11 in singles and 18-10 in doubles en route to earning All-ACC third team recognition this spring. He went 8-4 in singles after moving up to the No. 3 spot in the Blue Devils’ lineup, and teamed with senior Fred Saba for a national doubles ranking of No. 51.

A two-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team, Hemmeler is pursuing a major in economics and a certificate in Markets and Management Studies. He remains active in the Duke and Durham communities, interacting with fans in Duke’s Royal Blue Club and volunteering at events such as the Martin Luther King Jr. Million Meals program.

All regional award winners are eligible for the ITA national awards.
