ATHENS, Ga. – Two members of the Duke men’s tennis team concluded their seasons Thursday in the 2014 NCAA Singles Championship round of 32.

A day after defeating his highest-ranked opponent of the season in ninth-ranked Ray Sarmiento of Southern California, 44th-ranked Fred Saba suffered a 6-4, 6-4 setback to No. 39 Denis Nguyen of Harvard in the second round. Saba wrapped up his senior campaign with a final singles record of 21-10 and a four-year ledger of 103-50. He leaves the Duke program tied for eighth in career singles victories and as one of just 12 players all-time to surpass the 100-win milestone for his career. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla., native also compiled a career record of 89-52 in doubles while earning two selections to the All-ACC teams.

Junior Jason Tahir, the 32nd-ranked player in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll, also saw his run come to an end in Thursday’s second round. After topping No. 49 Raleigh Smith of Northwestern Wednesday, Tahir dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to No. 35 Mackenzie McDonald of UCLA Thursday morning. Tahir fought back from a 3-1 deficit in the first set to even up the score at 4-all, but McDonald held the edge in both sets. An All-ACC first team honoree this spring after guiding the Blue Devils from the No. 1 position in singles, Tahir finished his junior campaign with a 24-10 mark in singles, bringing his career ledger to 80-23 after three seasons.
