Duke Downs No. 20 Miami 5-2 For Second ACC Win

Coral Gables, Fla. Ė After starting the season 0-7 against teams in the top-25 the Blue Devils’ men’s tennis team received their first victory against a top-25 foe with a 5-2 win at No. 20 Miami on Friday.

Duke, ranked No. 66 in the nation, improved to 5-7 overall for the season and has started out 2-0 in the ACC. The Hurricanes fall to 9-4 overall and 2-2 in league play this season.

The Blue Devils were playing on the road for their sixth straight match on the road. At the No. 1 doubles position, David Goulet and Christopher Price got Duke off to a good start with a 9-8 victory over Daniel Vallverdu and Carl Sundberg, who are ranked No. 24 in the ITA doubles rankings. It is the duo’s second victory over a ranked doubles team this season as they improved to 11-9 overall and 6-6 in dual matches.

Dylan Arnould and Alex Stone then won their third consecutive match with a 9-7 decision at No. 3 over Keith Crawley and Hector Nieto to give the Blue Devils the doubles point. The Duke pair is now 8-4 in dual match play.

Duke’s two ranked singles players each earned victories on Friday. Goulet, ranked No. 51 in singles, played in the No. 2 spot and won 6-3, 6-4 against Vivek Subramanian. Goulet is undefeated at 6-0 when playing in the second slot. He has a 12-5 overall record in singles. No. 57 Reid Carleton earned a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Crawley in the No. 3 slot. Carleton has won a team-high 18 singles contests in his first collegiate season.

Arnould and Stone also won in singles on Friday. Stone clinched the victory for Duke with a 7-5, 6-4 win over J.C. Whitner at No. 5 in the order. It is the sixth singles victory for Stone on the year. Arnould also won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) to improve to 6-2 at the No. 4 position and 12-10 overall.  

Duke will stay in the Sunshine State for another ACC match on Sunday. They will be in Tallahassee for a contest against No. 7 Florida State at noon.
