Duke Downs Auburn In ITA Kickoff Weekend First Round

Alain Michel clinched the victory for Duke

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - No. 18 Duke defeated No. 22 Auburn 4-2 in the first round of the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament on Saturday at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion in Birmingham, Ala. after the match was delayed several hours and moved one hour North of the host site Tuscaloosa due to cold weather.

Junior Alain Michel gave the Blue Devils the victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Lucas Lopasso at the No. 6 singles spot as Duke went 4-1 in singles on the day after losing the doubles point to start the match. Michel was part of the Blue Devils' lone doubles victory, teaming with Jared Pinsky for an 8-4 win at No. 3 in the order.

Senior Dylan Arnould, ranked No. 62 in singles, earned his third win over a ranked opponent, claiming a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 win over No. 86 Alex Stamchev in the No. 3 slot. With the win Arnould improved to 10-3 on the season. No. 77 Torsten Wietoska proved his ranking with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at No. 4 while Junior Reid Carleton improved to 8-5 on the year with a 7-6, 6-2 win against Tim Hewitt at the No. 2 position.

Freshman Henrique Cunha faced a tough day against top 25 foes in doubles and singles. Cunha and Carleton fell short against No. 6 Tim Puetz and Stamchev, 8-6. Puetz, ranked No. 24 in singles, then came away with a three-set win at the No. 1 singles spot.

The Blue Devils move on to the second round of the tournament where they will face the host school, the University of Alabama on Sunday at 12 noon in Tuscaloosa. The 25th-ranked Crimson Tide cruised to a 4-0 win over No. 23 Arizona on Saturday to advance.
