Torsten Wietoska clinched Duke's 4-0 win

DURHAM, N.C. - It didn't take long for the No. 16 Duke men's tennis team to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday as they handed No. 72 Virginia Commonwealth a 4-0 loss at Ambler Tennis Stadium.

The Blue Devils hadn't played in nearly three weeks since the ACC Tournament Championship match on April 25 but didn't miss a beat as they earned the doubles point and first set victories in all six singles contests.

Sophomore Torsten Wietoska clinched the match for Duke with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Max Wennakoski at the No. 4 position in the lineup. Wietoska improved to 18-14 on the year with his first match-clinching win of the season.

Duke's top two players eased by their opponents for the first two singles points. No. 64 Reid Carleton earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory against Tim Johannsen in the No. 2 slot for his 20th singles win of the year. Carleton has now won at least 20 matches in all three of his collegiate seasons. No. 2 Henrique Cunha had no trouble with No. 25 Thibaut Charron at the No. 1 spot in the order. Cunha won 6-0, 6-1 to improve to 34-5 overall and 22-3 against ranked opponents. His victory moves him into a tie for fifth on Duke's single season wins list and tied for second for most victories by a freshman.

Carleton and Cunha gave Duke the doubles point with an 8-4 win in the top spot. The No. 1 duo in the nation claimed their school-record 38th win of the year with just five losses. Alain Michel and Wietoska also won in doubles for the pair's 14th victory.

Duke improved to 19-8 overall while VCU ends their season with a 14-12 record. The second round match will feature the Blue Devils against rival North Carolina as the Tar Heels picked up a 4-1 win over Nebraska in the earlier match in Durham.

In the earlier match of the day, North Carolina cruised to the doubles point with a pair of 8-3 victories at the No. 1 and 3 spots. The Tar Heels took a 2-0 lead when Nebraska's No. 1 player Christopher Aumueller retired due to an injury to give Clay Donato a victory. After the Huskers cut the lead to 2-1, North Carolina finished out the match with singles wins from No. 90 Brennan Boyajian at No. 4 and Andrew Crone at No. 6.

Duke and North Carolina met earlier this season in Durham with the Blue Devils sneaking away with a 4-3 victory as the match moved indoors due to inclement weather when the score was tied 3-3. Carleton came from behind to win a third set tiebreaker over Jose Hernandez at No. 2 to give Duke the victory.

Tickets for this weekend's matches are $5 for adults and $3 for students/seniors. They can be purchased at Ambler Tennis Stadium prior to the match.
