CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Duke’s varsity eight and varsity four beat Michigan State in the afternoon session of the UVa Invitational Saturday afternoon on Lake Monticello, while the varsity eight was less than four seconds shy of besting No. 15 Wisconsin.

Duke competed in eight races on the day, five of which were against top-20 teams including Virginia (No. 4) and Wisconsin (No. 15).

In the morning session, Duke’s varsity eight squad of Caroline Kiritsy (cox), Emily Theys, Claire Vannelli, Alex Stonehill, Katie Dukovich, Tara Dalton, Laura Sciarrino, Grace Cassidy and Hannah Hewitt clocked a 6:35.7, which was just 3.8 seconds behind the 15th-ranked Badgers. That Duke crew followed up with a win over Wisconsin in the afternoon session, turning in a time of 6:47.5.

In the second varsity eight, the Blue Devils turned in nearly identical times of 7:49.0 and 7:51.7 in their two races. Sarah Baker coxed the crew of Caroline Williams, Katie Burke, Sophia Staal and Nicole Antoine in the morning session’s second-place finish behind Wisconsin and switched with senior classmate Ashleigh Anne McKinney who coxed the squad to a win over Michigan State in the afternoon session.

Duke’s second varsity eight of Simone Pitre (cox), Dana Lerro, Sophia Blair, Allison Beattie, Sydney Johnson, Karolina Wadolowska, Rachel Wolsfelt, Victoria Tsamis and Kaila Perez broke seven minutes in the morning with a time of 6:57.3 to take second behind Wisconsin. That crew was just over five seconds shy of beating Michigan State in the afternoon with a time of 7:05.4.

The UVa Invitational marks the end of the regular season for the Blue Devils, who will compete in the 2013 ACC Championships on Saturday, May 8.
