DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University men’s soccer head coach John Kerr recently announced the Blue Devils 2013 schedule. The slate features nine NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, 12 home games and the addition of the three newest members of the Atlantic Coast Conference – Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Notre Dame.

The Blue Devils open the campaign Aug. 23 with a home night game against NCAA Tournament qualifier Old Dominion. The Monarchs are coming off of an 11-3-3 season in which they made their third straight and ninth overall appearance in the NCAA postseason.

Duke remains at home the following weekend with the annual Duke Nike Classic. The Blue Devils welcome the addition of Elon as the other local squad, while Rutgers and Northeastern make the trek south for the weekend event. Duke opens the tournament against Rutgers, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m., and ends the weekend against Northeastern Sept. 1 at 2:30 p.m. Northeastern is coming off of an outstanding 14-2-5 season that saw it advance to the NCAA Tournament second round before falling to No. 4 seed Connecticut 1-0.

The schedule only gets more challenging as the Blue Devils dive right into ACC play with a road contest at perennial power and 2012 NCAA semifinalist Maryland Sept. 6. The Terrapins advanced to the College Cup a year ago and are coming off of a 20-1-3 campaign.

Duke plays its first midweek game Sept. 10 against Georgia Southern and remains home three days later versus the Hokies of Virginia Tech. The Tuesday and Friday night schedule continues for the next four weeks with the Blue Devils playing at home five times and traveling three times. Among the home games is a match against new ACC member Syracuse Sept. 20, which is coming off its most successful season in recent history. The Orange finished the year ranked 17th and advancing to the NCAA third round before losing to eventual NCAA runner-up Georgetown in penalty kicks.

Included among the road games for the Blue Devils is a trip to South Bend, Ind. in the inaugural ACC matchup with the Fighting Irish Sept. 27 and the annual ACC rivalry game at North Carolina a week later. Both Notre Dame and North Carolina advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago with Notre Dame making it to the third round and UNC to the quarterfinals.

Following the matchup with the Tar Heels, Duke returns home for a pair of ACC games against Virginia Oct. 8 and NC State Oct. 11. The final five games of the regular season will be challenging as the Blue Devils face three NCAA Tournament squads and four ACC opponents overall. Duke closes out its home schedule against Wake Forest Oct. 25 and hits the road for the final two weeks at Pittsburgh Nov. 1 and at Clemson Nov. 8.

The ACC Tournament will follow the same format as a year ago with quarterfinal sites being hosted at campus sites and the semifinal and championship games being played in Germantown, Md., Nov. 15 and 17.
