DURHAM, N.C. – Just a week away from officially kicking off the 2013 campaign, the Duke men’s soccer team will get one final warm-up when it takes on Old Dominion in an exhibition game Friday night at 7 p.m. Admission is free at Koskinen Stadium for the game.

Recapping Preseason

The Blue Devils opened their preseason Aug. 14 and have been training twice per day since then in preparation for the season. Duke hosted George Washington in an exhibition Aug. 18 and battled the Colonials to a 0-0 tie despite outshooting them 11-4 for the game. Redshirt senior Alex Long made two saves to earn his first shutout as a Blue Devil goalkeeper.

Captains

Senior defender Sebastien Ibeagha and junior midfielder Sean Davis will serve as captains for the 2013 season. Ibeagha has earned a lot of praise during the preseason, landing on a pair of preseason All-America first teams and on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List. Davis, an All-ACC second team selection last year, is considered one of the top midfielders in the ACC and country. In addition, each class will have a captain as Rob Dolot serves as the captain for the seniors, Wilson Fisher for the juniors and Zach Mathers for the sophomore group.

New Additions

Head coach John Kerr welcomes five newcomers to the squad this year after the departure of lone senior James Belshaw. Long comes in as a redshirt senior after finishing a career at South Carolina. He is enrolled in Duke’s Master of Arts and Liberal Studies program. Freshmen Jimmy Doll, Jared Golestani, Brody Huitema and Seo-In Kim complete the talented incoming group. Huitema just arrived on campus after playing with the Canadian U-18 National Team in an international tournament in Spain. He helped Canada take fourth place overall, falling to Mexico in a penalty kick shootout in the third-place match. Doll and Kim both saw quality minutes for the Blue Devils in the exhibition against Georgetown and also are expected to have an immediate impact on the program.

Old Dominion

The Monarchs are on a tear in their exhibition games, owning wins over No. 3 Georgetown and No. 13 Coastal Carolina. Old Dominion downed the 2012 NCAA runner-up 1-0 Aug. 18 with a goal from junior Ivan Militar. Against the Chanticleers Old Dominion picked up another 1-0 victory off of a score from freshman Jesse Miralrio. The Monarchs held a 17-7 shot advantage in that game with Sean Stowe and Connor Miller teaming up for the shutout.

2013 Schedule

Duke welcomes the addition of Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and Syracuse to its ACC regular season schedule. The Blue Devils will travel to Notre Dame and Pittsburgh, while welcoming the Orange to Koskinen Stadium. Duke’s ACC schedule starts with a bang as it makes the trip to College Park, Md. for a matchup with the preseason ACC favorite Terrapins. Duke’s home schedule features ACC foes Virginia, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, NC State and Wake Forest. The meeting with the Demon Deacons will be broadcast on NSCAATV, while the Duke at UNC game will be on ESPN3.  The Blue Devils kick off the year Aug. 30 in the John Rennie Nike Classic against Rutgers at 7:30 p.m.
