DURHAM, N.C. -After Duke cruised to the championship matches in all three singles brackets of the 2012 Duke Fab Four Invitational, only two Blue Devils played on the final day of play as rain forced the action indoors to the Sheffied Indoor Tennis Center.
The title matches in the singles draws included all Duke players and were not played out. Competing for the Blue Devils were freshmen Daniel McCall and Josh Levine.
In his first career collegiate tournament, McCall dropped his fifth place match in the white singles draw to Alabama's Becker O'Shaugnessy, 6-3, 6-2. Levine, playing in the third-place match, fell to VCU's Max Wennakoski, 7-6 (7), 6-7 (4), 1-0 (3).
The Blue Devils captured three titles in the doubles draws Saturday and were represented in each of the singles championship tilts. Throughout the weekend, the Blue Devils played to a 30-4 record against opposing teams.
"It is the perfect start to the year," said head coach Ramsey Smith. "I thought all our guys played well and competed hard; it was just a great overall showing. This should give our team a lot of confidence and momentum going into All-Americans."
The Blue Devils will be back in action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Qualifying rounds Sept. 29- Oct. 3 in Tulsa, Okla.
