TULSA, Okla. – Sophomore Raphael Hemmeler advanced to the main singles draw at the ITA All-American Championships on Wednesday, as the Duke men’s tennis team continued play at the event hosted by the University of Tulsa.
Hemmeler, the 76th-ranked player in the ITA preseason rankings, defeated Tulsa's Alejandro Sanchez, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. During the qualifying stage, the Swiss product defeated each of his three opponents in a third set.
Freshman Michael Redlicki was defeated in the final qualifying round by Andrew Bettles of Boise State in a hard-fought match, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
The main singles draw is set to begin Thursday with Henrique Cunha, the nation’s top-ranked player, earning the No. 1 seed in the event. Cunha will play his first round match against Hunter Reese of Tennessee at 1 p.m. ET. Junior Chris Mengel, who also earned an automatic bid to the main draw, will play Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee at 9 a.m. Hemmeler will face UCLA’s Marcos Giron at 10:30 a.m. In doubles action, eighth seeded Cunha and Hemmeler are set to play Emilio Gomes and Yannick Hanfmann of USC at 5 p.m. in the main draw.
