DURHAM, N.C. – Duke women’s tennis head coach Jamie Ashworth announced on Wednesday that Beatrice Capra, Monica Turewicz and Annie Mulholland have all signed a national letters of intent to play for the Blue Devils starting in the fall of 2011.

“As a group, we are looking for great things out of this recruiting class,” Ashworth said. “Together they bring a tremendous amount of national and international experience to our program.  Although we are losing four unbelievable players in Nadine Fahoum, Elizabeth Plotkin, Ellah Nze and Reka Zsilinszka, our program will not miss a beat with the addition of these three girls.  Their desire to improve and help keep Duke at the top of the national rankings speaks volumes about all three.  They are going to be a great group to work with and we are extremely excited to see how they help shape Duke Tennis over the next few years.”

Capra is a native of Ellicott City, Md., and graduated from the Laurel Springs School in May 2010, and is currently the top-ranked recruit in the nation. Capra took a year out of high school to work on her WTA ranking and participated in the 2010 US Open and advanced to the third round and defeated two players ranked in the top-100 in the world before falling to current No. 16 in the world Maria Sharapova.

“I’ve always been attracted to Duke because of the high level tennis they have been able to produce,” Capra said. “Not only have the coaches made an impact on the entire team but they have also helped their player’s transition on the pro tour which really inspires me. Whatever I do in life I always strive to be the best. In my opinion I consider Duke to be the best school in the country. It has a balance between high level academics and high level sports and I believe all the students push each other to be the best they can be. I was recruited by Florida, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Northwestern, but Duke is the best place for me.”

Some other career highlights include winning the 2010 Italian Junior Open, advancing to the quarterfinals at the 2010 French Junior Open and winning the 40th Banana Bowl held in Brazil.

“Beatrice (Trice) is a great addition to what already was one of the strongest recruiting classes in the country,” Ashworth said. “Her work ethic, focus, and determination to be the best player not only in college but in the world will help make both her and her teammates at Duke better. The experiences and success she has had around the world will allow her to come to college and immediately make a tremendous impact on the college tennis world.”

Turewicz , a native of Lake Forest, Ill., is currently ranked the No. 5 recruit nationally according to TennisRecruiting.net and No. 12 in the TennisRPI. She was ranked as high No. 56 in the International Tennis Federation Junior rankings and is the top-ranked player in the state of Illinois.

"The academics and athletic reputation attracted me to Duke and the team seemed so close, like family," Turewicz said. "I already wanted to go to Duke but Jamie told me to visit other schools just to compare. So he wanted me to feel comfortable, which means he cares about his players. The campus is beautiful and I wanted to be somewhere on the east coast where I could be slightly closer to my family."

Some career highlights include a semifinal appearance at the USTA International Spring Championships and at the 2010 Easter Bowl.

“Monica is going to be a great player to work with and have on our team,” Ashworth said. “ She is feisty on the court and makes her opponents earn every point they can in a match, she does not give away a lot of free points.  Monica has traveled all over the world playing tournaments and that international experience will allow her to step on the courts and be a factor at Duke immediately.  We are excited to be getting someone like Monica who is a great athlete and will help our team both on the singles and doubles court. “

Mulholland, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., currently attends The Pendleton School and is currently ranked No. 93 in the ITF Junior rankings and is listed as the No. 40 recruit in the nation according to TennisRecruiting.net.

“Duke’s unique blend of high level academics and athletics initially attracted me to the university along with the team atmosphere,” Mulholland said. “The girls are friends but at the same time push each other to be the best. Duke has an amazing academic support center, which as a student-athlete is key. I had originally planned to look around and explore other universities, but after visiting Duke I knew I didn’t want to go anywhere else. Duke was my first and last visit.”

Mulholland was a quarterfinalist at the Junior International Hard Court Championships, a semifinalist at the 2010 Uruguay Bowl and a quarterfinalist at the International Grass Court Championships.

“We are looking forward to having Annie here at Duke, she is going to be a tremendous asset not only to our program but to the entire Duke community,” Ashworth said. “ Like Trice and Monica, Annie is someone who brings a lot of international experience to Duke having traveled extensively all over the world playing junior events.  She is a strong girl who has a tremendous upside to her game.  We are excited to see her game grow on the courts here at Duke and know that she will be a great addition to our program.”

Capra, Turewicz and Mulholland will begin their careers at Duke in the upcoming 2011-12 season.
