PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The doubles team of junior Hanna Mar and sophomore Beatrice Capra won their quarterfinal match on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Riviera All-American Championship in Pacific Pasalides, Calif. Despite only playing one match together last season, the 19th-ranked duo has defeated two ranked opponents en route to the semifinal, including an 8-5 win over third-ranked Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting of California on Thursday.
In the first round of the main draw on Thursday, Capra and Mar downed Ema Burgic and Jordaan Sanford of Baylor, 8-6, before edging the Goransson and Schutting to advance to the quarterfinals. In their quarterfinal matchup on Friday, Capra and Mar cruised to an easy 8-2 victory over No. 21 Simona Synkova and Veronica Popovici of Wyoming.
“It was by far the most complete match of the tournament we have played,” said head coach Jamie Ashworth. “We returned really well and did not give up a lot of free points. We talked before the match about getting off to a quick start and we were able to do that. We came out and won the first 13 points of the match, which set the tone for the rest of play. Tomorrow we need to do the same thing, keep playing aggressive, smart tennis.”
Capra and Mar are slated to face No. 34 Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely of Tennessee on Saturday with the winner advancing to the championship match on Sunday. Boren and Szekely enter the match on a seven match win streak, after winning four straight matches in qualifying to earn a spot in the main draw.
