DURHAM, N.C. – Following the match against No. 27 Georgia Tech, senior Mary Clayton was honored as one of the best players in Duke women’s tennis history as she was presented a place in the Duke Tennis Hall of Fame.

“Mary will leave here with over a 100 singles wins, and she is one of the top in winning percentage all-time here,” said head coach Jamie Ashworth. “When you talk about adding people to the wall here, it’s not just about what they’ve accomplished on the court, but about what they’ve accomplished off the court as well. Mary has been a great fixture in our program for her entire three and a half years here. She’s been a great leader for us, and it’s a really special thing for all of us.”

A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Clayton has made a tremendous impact on the women’s tennis program, leading the team to a 89-20 overall record, including a 32-6 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play. During her time in Durham, the Blue Devils have captured two ACC regular season titles, one ACC Championship and an appearance in the Final Four of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

“I am really touched,” Clayton said. “Obviously I am really happy that I have come this far, but I really want to say that all of you [teammates, coaches and family] make me better. Everything that the program has given me has been amazing. My relationship with Jamie [Ashworth] has been extremely helpful in getting me to where I am today. I am so honored.”

After her four years in Durham, Clayton’s name has been etched into the Duke record books in a number of places including career singles victories, winning percentage and career conference singles wins. The English major has tallied 106 career singles victories, making her one of only 21 Blue Devils to reach the coveted 100-win mark. Of those 21, Clayton has the ninth highest winning percentage, claiming nearly .760 of her matches. In addition, Clayton has captured 27 career ACC singles wins, the fourth most in program history.

Clayton will play her final home regular season match Sunday, as the Blue Devils take on No. 16 Clemson at Ambler Tennis Stadium at 12 p.m.
