DURHAM, N.C. -- The Blue Devil women’s tennis team will kick off their 2013-14 season on Friday by hosting the Duke Fab Four Invitational at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C. There are a total of 11 teams at the tournament including seven of the top 30 teams from the final 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) national team rankings.
Seeing action this weekend from Sept. 13-15 will be Alabama (11), Duke (14), Furman, Miami (8), North Carolina (4), Oklahoma State (28), Ole Miss (38), Texas (17), Texas A&M (3), William & Mary (44).
The Fab-Four Invitational will showcase a number of players ranked in the ITA preseason rankings including University of Texas’ No. 10 Breaunna Addison and 15 of the top 125 players. In addition, the invitational will see six of the top 60 doubles teams compete. The Blue Devils have four players ranked individually in the preseason rankings, in addition to freshman Chalena Scholl, who appears at No. 2 on the ITA Preseason Freshman/Newcomer Rankings.
The women's tournament begins with the first and second round of doubles on Friday starting at 10 a.m. and the first round of women's singles starting at 1:30 p.m. The action picks up on Saturday with the final round of doubles starting at 9 a.m. and the second round of singles set to start at 11:00 a.m., followed by the third round of singles at 2:30 p.m. The finals for singles will be Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m.
In singles action, the Blue Devils will feature four student-athletes competing – senior Hanna Mar, freshman Alyssa Smith, senior Marianne Jodoin and junior Ester Goldfeld. Mar will open against Ansley Speaks of Furman, while Smith will take on Karyn Guttormsen of Oklahoma State University. Jodoin faces Alex Moreno-Kaste of Furman and Goldfeld will go up against Danielle Spielmann of Alabama. All singles play starts at 1:30 p.m., on Friday.
Duke will have two doubles teams playing over the weekend. The duo of Goldfeld/Jodoin will open against Stephens/Verboven of Ole Miss, while the Blue Devil tandem of Mar/Smith will take on Zabor/Blanco of Alabama. The doubles action begins at 10 a.m., on Friday.
