DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke and Yale women’s tennis teams advanced out of the first round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

Duke, the No. 3 overall seed and tournament host, waited a little over an hour past the original start time to get the match started but wasn’t affected by the delay. The Blue Devils came out firing on all cylinders in doubles to win two out of the three matches to claim the double point and take an early 1-0 lead.

Duke dominated all three doubles matches in the contest. The No. 90 tandem of Mary Clayton and Monica Gorny made quick work of their opponents on court three. Clayton and Gorny picked up an 8-0 decision to improve their overall record to 23-6 and 17-4 in dual matches.  The No. 52 pair of Ellah Nze and Rachel Kahan sealed the doubles point for Duke on court one with an 8-4 win to improve to 9-8 in dual matches this season. The No. 55 duo of Nadine Fahoum and Hanna Mar were leading on court two by a score of 6-2, when Nze and Kahan claimed the doubles point.

The Blue Devils started singles action strong and were leading on all six courts when lightning and rain forced a delay and play was resumed on the indoor courts at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. Once play resumed, Duke continued to dominate on the courts by winning the first set in all six singles matces.

Freshman Rachel Kahan Postmatch Interview

Senior Reka Zsilinszka, playing in the No. 2 spot, didn’t drop a single point in her match as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-0, victory. Zsilinszka’s 31st win of the season gave Duke a 2-0 lead. Kahan and Clayton added the final two points for the Blue Devils as they picked up wins on courts four and five to seal the 4-0 win. Kahan, the ACC Freshman of the Year, picked up her 27th consecutive win in straight sets by a score of 6-0, 6-1, to remain perfect on the season at 25-0, while Clayton earned her 29th win of the season.
Duke is making its 12th consecutive appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and has posted an overall record of 14-2.
