Duke Set For NCAA Regionals On Friday

DURHAM, N.C. - Seeded third overall in this year's NCAA Women's Tennis Championship and beginning its journey toward a trip to Athens, Ga., the Duke women's tennis team will host Big South Conference champion Winthrop (15-10) in its first round matchup on Friday, May 11 at 1 p.m. The Blue Devils will be making their 23rd consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament, where the Blue Devils have reached at least the third round of the draw 19 times during that span.

In the other regional matchup, Mountain West Conference champion TCU (18-5) will face off with South Carolina (15-8) at 10 a.m., Friday, with the winner taking on the victor of Duke and Winthrop at 3 p.m., on Saturday.

Duke All-Time vs. Winthrop

The Blue Devils have posted a 19-1 overall record in NCAA tournament first round matches and are 16-0 since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1996. Duke leads Winthrop 3-0 in the all-time series. The Blue Devils' last meeting with the Eagles came in the first round of the 2006 NCAA tournament, where Duke defeated Winthrop, 5-0, on its home courts.

Home Sweet Home

Duke is 12-0 at home this season, and those 12 wins rank second in school history for the most in one season. The 1988, 2009 and 2010 teams are tied at the top of the list with 13, respectively.

Unbeaten Streak Rolls On

The Blue Devils have won 14 straight matches dating back to the start of ACC play on March 17. The current winning streak is the eighth-longest winning streak in program history.

Shutout Machine

Duke recorded seven shutouts in its 11 ACC regular season matches, the most in school history. Fifteen  of the Blue Devils' 25 wins this season were of the shutout variety, while nine of them were perfect 7-0 victories. With one more shutout, Duke will tie the program record (16) set by the 1998-99 team.

Singles Winning Streaks Continue

Freshman Beatrice Capra has won 15 straight matches, tied with 2009 NCAA Singles Champion Mallory Cecil for the third longest streak by a freshman in program history. Junior Mary Clayton and freshman Monica Turewicz are currently winners of 10 consecutive matches, respectively.

Capra One of Top Freshmen

Freshman Beatrice Capra has put together a very impressive first year as a Blue Devil. The ACC Player of the Year, ACC Freshman of the Year and ACC Tournament's MVP has a 27-3 singles record, an incredible 21-1 ledger in dual singles matches, a 9-0 mark in ACC play and a remarkable 18-3 standing against ranked opponents. In doubles she has tallied 31 wins, which ranks tied for third amongst freshmen on Duke's all-time list.        

Clayton Notches 30 Wins

Junior Mary Clayton has 31 singles wins this season, and has won at least 30 matches in back-to-back seasons. The last Duke player to achieve the feat was Reka Zsilinszka in 2008 and 2009.                                                                  

Singles Dominance

The Blue Devils own a 117-19 (.860) record in dual singles matches this season. Six players have won at least 20 total matches this season and four of those six have won 25 or more.

Doubles Point Key to Success  

Behind the efforts of three doubles teams ranked in the top 50, the Blue Devils are an impressive 21-0 this season when they win the doubles point.                                                                                      

Consistency in the Rankings

Duke has been ranked in the top-five in 26 straight ITA polls - the longest active streak in the nation. The Blue Devils have also been ranked in the top-10 for 72 straight weeks.                                                                                                                   

Ranked Players

The Blue Devils possess six players with national rankings, along with three doubles teams in the top 50. Duke, Florida and UCLA are the nation's only teams with six ranked singles players.                                  

20-Win Plateau

Duke notched its fifth straight season with at least 20 victories with its 4-0 win over fifth-ranked North Carolina on April 12th. The Blue Devils have reached the 20-win mark in 15 of their last 17 seasons.
