Sophomore Beatrice Capra headlines the group of Blue Devils who earned preseason singles rankings, as the Ellicott City, Md., native was tabbed No. 2 overall on the list. Capra wrapped up an outstanding freshman campaign with an overall record of 32-5 in singles, as well as a 23-2 mark in dual match play, and collected All-America accolades after reaching the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Singles Championship in Athens, Ga.
Three other Blue Devils were also ranked in the top 50 in the preseason poll, with junior Marianne Jodoin coming in at No. 27, junior Hanna Mar listed at No. 35 and senior Mary Clayton tabbed No. 44. Sophomores Monica Turewicz, Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland rounded out the ranked Duke players at No. 67, 68 and 108, respectively.
The Blue Devils were also well represented in the ITA's preseason doubles rankings, as three tandems were listed among the top 60 in the nation. The duo of Capra and Mar received a No. 19 ranking, followed by the duo of Clayton and Jodoin at No. 27 and Goldfeld and Mulholland at No. 43.
"Although the individual rankings do not mean a lot at this time of the year, they are a good starting point for all of the girls," said head coach Jamie Ashworth. "We are looking forward to getting out on the court next week and back into match mode with our invitational tournament. Everyone has been working hard over the summer and we are excited to let those results show".
After making its 24th consecutive trip to the NCAA Team Championship and earning its eighth semifinal appearance in program history last season, Duke will open the 2012-13 campaign Sept. 14-16 at the Duke Fab Four Invitational in Cary, N.C.
The first team rankings of the 2012-13 season will be announced by the ITA on Jan. 3, 2013.
