LEXINGTON, Va.-The Duke University wrestling team captured six victories to post an exciting 22-15 win at VMI Saturday night. The Blue Devils earned wins at 125, 133, 141, 174, 197 and 285 pounds to secure the seven-point win over the Keydets. Redshirt freshman Trey Adamson provided the clinching win for the Blue Devils at 174 pounds.

Duke improves to 2-4 overall and gives the Blue Devils their third win in four tries over VMI (0-8) on its home mat.

The match started at 184 pounds with VMI's Jonathan Jones edging Dylan Ryan of Duke 6-0 for the early 3-0 lead. It was all Duke, however, over the next five matches as the Blue Devils built an 18-3 advantage against the Keydets with four bouts remaining.

Redshirt freshman Michael Chapman started the streak at 197 pounds with a heart-stopping 6-4 overtime decision over Urayoan Garcia. Chapman scored a takedown early in the bout before Garcia registered a pair of escapes over the next two periods to even the match 2-2 heading into the final session. The Duluth, Ga., native regained a one-point edge to start the third period, but VMI wasted little time and responded with a takedown 32 seconds later for its first lead in the bout, 4-3. In similar fashion, Chapman answered back 18 seconds later with an escape to knot the match 4-4 and force overtime where he scored a takedown with 21 ticks left for the 6-4 sudden victory decision.

The excitement continued at 285 with Duke's Brian Self securing three more points with a 3-2 triple overtime triumph over Michael LaPrade. Trailing 2-1 in the third period, Self used an escape midway through the final stanza to force overtime. Neither wrestler scored in the sudden victory period, forcing a second tiebreak. Self, from bottom in the tiebreak, escaped with 24 seconds remaining for the 3-2 decision. The win was his second at heavyweight this season and eighth overall.

Duke continued to roll as it earned bonus points with a major decision and a technical fall from redshirt senior Peter Terrezza and redshirt sophomore Brandon Gambucci, respectively. Terrezza, competing at 125 pounds, earned his second dual victory of the year as he cruised past Armondo Herrera-Dos Reis 11-3. The veteran Blue Devil, after building an early lead, notched the crucial takedown to secure the major decision in the final 14 seconds.

Gambucci picked up his ninth win of the year and second tech fall, shutting out Andriy Onufriyenko 17-0 in just 4:08. The Mansfield, Ohio native jumped all over Onufriyenko, 8-0, in the first period and added nine more in the next 1:08 for the win. In dual matches this season, Gambucci has scored 18 points in four wins.

Sophomore Tanner Hough rounded out the win streak for the Blue Devils, dispatching Ryan Goodsell 4-2 at 141 pounds. Hough, leading 2-1 after five minutes of wrestling, allowed Goodsell to escape to make it 2-2 early in the third period. With a third match looking like it might head to overtime, Hough powered through the final minute and scored a takedown with 41 seconds to go for his 12th victory of the season.

VMI mounted a comeback, getting six points from a forfeit at 149 and posting decisions at both 157 and 165 pounds to pull within three, 18-15, with one bout remaining.

Leading by a narrow three points, the match came down to Adamson at 174 pounds. Adamson, facing John Dommert, rose to the occasion right from the opening whistle with a takedown and a three-point nearfall in the first 46 seconds. The Riverton, Utah native added two more escapes and two more takedowns in the final four minutes of action to clinch the match for the Blue Devils with a 12-3 major decision. The victory pushed his wins total to 10 for the year and his dual record to 3-3.

Duke returns to action tomorrow as it takes on ACC foe and No. 11 Virginia at 12 p.m. Live scoring is available at GoDuke.com.
