DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women’s tennis team retained the No. 1 ranking in the nation following a 1-1 opening weekend to conference play, as announced by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Tuesday afternoon. The rankings are the first computerized, point-per-match, format of the 2014 season.

The Blue Devils secured the No. 1 ranking two weeks earlier after winning the ITA National Team Indoors Championship in Charlottesville, Va. In addition to Duke, No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 Virginia, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 Florida, No. 6 Southern California, No. 7 Northwestern, No. 8 Vanderbilt, No. 9 Texas A&M and No. 10 Alabama round out the top 10. The ACC leads all conferences with seven teams appearing in the top 25.

The ITA also released singles and doubles rankings Tuesday, with second-ranked Beatrice Capra headlining the Blue Devils who appear among the nation’s top-125 singles players. Capra previously held the No. 3 ranking in the country. In addition to Capra moving up in the rankings, junior Ester Goldfeld also saw a jump, advancing two positions to No. 18 in the nation. Senior Hanna Mar currently sits at No. 44 while freshman Alyssa Smith moved up to No. 92 in the nation, the highest ranking of her collegiate career.

In doubles, the duo of Capra and Mar advanced two positions to No. 4, while Goldfeld and junior Annie Mulholland remain in the top 30, appearing at No. 27. Goldfeld and senior Marianne Jodoin round out the Duke doubles pairs appearing among the nation’s top 60 tandems, ranking 43rd.

The Blue Devils return to competition Friday, Feb. 28, welcoming Notre Dame to the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.
