Duke Sweeps Singles Competition On Final Day At Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, MICH. - The No. 17 Blue Devil women’s tennis team ended competition at the Michigan Invitational on Sunday by sweeping singles play and earning two doubles wins in four matches played.

Duke met Denver in singles to start off the day, as freshman Reka Zsilinszka defeated Mallory Voelker, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 position and classmate Ellah Nze defeated Ute Schnoy, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 2. In flight No. 3, sophomore Elizabeth Plotkin posted a 6-0, 6-2, win over Annette Aksdal.

Playing at No. 4, sophomore Amanda Granson got past Michigan’s Denise Muresan, 6-3, 6-1, while junior Melissa Mang recorded a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Julia Bauregger at No. 5. Classmate Jessi Robinson defeated Kyla Iwinski, 6-2, 7-5, and senior Tory Zawacki notched a straight-set win over Mikele Smith (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 6 and 7 slots, respectively.

Doubles action versus Michigan saw Granson and Mang combine for an 8-5 victory over Tania Mahtani and Chisako Sugiyama at the top spot, while Zawacki and Zsilinszka also came away victorious by way of a commanding 8-1 triumph over Tanvi Dudhela and Allie Shafner at No. 4.

Robinson paired with sophomore Tara Iyer to go up against Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno, but the duo dropped a hard-fought 9-7 decision to the Wolverines at No. 2. Action at No. 3 saw Nze and Plotkin suffer an 8-2 loss to Muresan and Lindsey Howard.

Duke will return to the court on January 27 as the Blue Devils travel to Bloomington, Ind., to face the Hoosiers for their first dual meet of the 2008 campaign. First serve is set for 11 a.m.
