DURHAM, N.C. - Please join the fifth-ranked Blue Devil women’s basketball team, the ACC and the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in raising awareness for the fight against breast cancer by participating in the Play 4Kay Initiative. Duke is asking fans to trade in their Duke blue for pink this Sunday, February 17, 2013 as the Blue Devils take on the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in Cameron Indoor Stadium. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
The Blue Devils will be wearing white uniforms with pink trim along with pink shoelaces for the game. All cancer survivors in attendance will be recognized during the contest.
Play 4Kay is a unified effort of a nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness and funds for cancer research on and off the court. The late Kay Yow, former N.C. State head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst to this initiative after her third recurrence of breast cancer in 2006. Since its inception, Play 4Kay has raised $8 million dollars for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Sunday’s game will also be the final event in a week long partnership with Samaritan’s Feet, a non-profit organization that raises money to provide shoes for those in need all around the world. Duke head coach Joanne P. McCallie and Wake Forest head coach Jen Hoover will coach in bare feet to bring awareness to the organization.
Samaritans Feet was started by Emmanuel Ohonme after his life was forever changed when a stranger gave him his first pair of shoes as a boy in Lagos, Nigerian. Ohonme went on to earn a Division I basketball scholarship and became inspired to fulfill his vision of putting 10 million pairs of shoes on the feet of 10 million orphans and impoverished people a reality.
