DURHAM, N.C. -- Duke sophomore Mads Soegaard fired a one-under 142 to finish tied for fifth in the stroke-play portion of the 118th Amateur Championship (June 17-22) in St. Andrews, Scotland. Tim Gornik, a 2013 Duke graduate, posted a three-over 146 to tie for 30th as both players advanced on to match play.

Craig Hinton and Adrian Meronk shared medalist honors at three-under with Scott Gibson and Graeme Robertson finishing tied for third at 141 (-2). Soegaard and four others tied for fifth as only nine players finished stroke play under-par.

Soegaard opened with a two-under 70 at Prince’s GC before posting a one-over 72 at Royal Cinque Ports. The Ikast, Jylland, Denmark, native started the tournament slowly with two bogeys over his first four holes before settling in to birdie No. 6, No. 7, No. 10, No. 12 and No. 15 to move to four-under. Soegaard suffered a double-bogey on No. 18 to complete his opening round. Despite the tough finish, Soegaard held the tournament lead after one round of play.

Soegaard got off to a much better start at Royal Cinque Ports, playing the first 12 holes at two-under with birdies on No. 3 and No. 5. He suffered back-to-back bogeys on No. 13 and No. 14 before moving back to red figures with a birdies on the 451-yard, par 4 15th hole. Soegaard again struggled to close with bogeys on No. 17 and No. 18 to end the round at +1 (72).

Gornik opened with a nine-over 80 at the Royal Cinque Ports course before charging up the leaderboard with an impressive six-under 66 at Prince’s in his second round of play. The native of Slovenia carded seven birdies, 10 pars and just one bogey at the 7,228-yard Prince’s GC. Gornik carded five front nine birdies and added birdies on No. 15 and No. 18 to secure a spot in match play by one stroke. Gornik’s six-under 66 was tied for the second-best round at Prince’s GC.

The field for The Amateur Championship is comprised of 288 players from 29 countries. The stroke-play stage of The Amateur Championship is played over the first two days of competition at Royal Cinque Ports and Prince’s GC before the field is cut to 64 and ties. The match-play stage is played over the final four days at Royal Cinque Ports.

Soegaard faces Nathan Kimsey in the Round of 64 Wednesday, while Gornik squares off against Robbie Van West.

Complete stroke-play and match-play results for the event are available at www.randa.org. The winner of the Amateur Championship earns a place in The Open Championship at Muirfield, a place in the US Open and traditionally an invitation to the Masters.
