In doubles play, the Blue Devils lost the doubles point for only the second time this year. On court one, the duo of senior Mary Clayton and sophomore Ester Goldfeld fell to third-ranked Brooke Bolender and Emina Bektas, 8-1, while the tandem of junior Hanna Mar and sophomore Monica Turewicz were edged by the Wolverines No. 41 ranked team of Ronit Yurovsky and Sarah Lee, 8-2. In the third position, junior Marianne Jodoin and sophomore Annie Mulholland held a 6-5 edge when the doubles point was clinched.
Duke struggled to slow Michigan's momentum in singles action, as the squad fell to early deficits on five of the six courts. In the top position, No. 13 Mar was downed by 41st-ranked Bektas, 6-1, 6-2, while Mulholland, a native of Portland, Ore., was downed by Zhu, 6-2, 6-4, playing on court five to give the Wolverines a 3-0 lead.
Clayton lost the first set to No. 75 Lee, 6-3, on court three and dropped the first two games in the second set before winning five straight games to take the second set, 6-3. In the third set, No. 62 Clayton broke serve to take a 3-0 lead en route to a 6-2 victory.
In the sixth position, Jodoin and Nguyen traded games in the first set, carrying the set into a tiebreaker at 6-6. Nguyer jumped out to an early 2-1 lead in the tiebreaker, but Jodoin was able to break serve to take a 3-2 edge and carried that momentum to take the set, 7-6. After claiming the first set, Jodoin continued her solid play to take the match, 7-6, 6-1.
Goldfeld, ranked No. 38 in the most recent ITA poll, fell 6-3 in the first set against Yurovsky, but rallied to grab a 3-2 lead in the second set after breaking serve. Goldfeld carried that momentum to take the second set, 6-4, but could not slow Yurovsky in the third set, falling behind 5-2. Goldfeld responded by breaking serve twice to level the match at 5-5, but was unable to overcome Yurovsky and dropped the set, 7-5, clinching the match for Michigan.
On court four, Turewicz fell behind 3-1 early to Bolender, but battled back to level the match at 4-4. After winning consecutive games to draw even, Turewicz could not hold serve and dropped the first set, 6-4. In the second, Turewicz led 6-5, but was unable to break serve, pushing the match into a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Turewicz took a 4-2 lead and continued to roll to take the set, 7-6. Turewicz rolled 6-3 in the third set to record her 23rd consecutive singles victory, however, the Wolverines had already clinched the match.
Duke will travel to South Bend, Ind., to play No. 18 Notre Dame Sunday, March 3, at 11 a.m. For live stats, visit GoDuke.com.
