New York, N.Y. -- Duke University Vice President and Director of Athletics Dr. Kevin White was honored on Wednesday night as the recipient of the Athletic Director of the Year accolade at the 2014 Sports Business Awards in New York, N.Y.

The event was held at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.

"I'm certainly honored and humbled to receive this award -- sincere thanks to the Sports Business Journal for a special evening here in New York City," said White. "This honor extends well beyond me. It is a tribute to everyone who makes Duke University and Duke Athletics so special, and without question at the top of that list is our group of nearly 650 student-athletes."

White joined the Duke staff in 2008.

White was chosen from five nominees for Athletic Director of the Year, including, in alphabetical order, Mike Alden, University of Missouri; Greg Byrne, University of Arizona; Judy Rose, University of North Carolina, Charlotte; and Scott Woodward, University of Washington.

On campus, Kevin White is charging forward with plans to upgrade Cameron Indoor Stadium and to give Wallace Wade Stadium a makeover. His vision to spruce up those venerable old facilities, while not sacrificing their historic attributes, has been a guiding force in the effort to push Duke into a new era of athletics.

White also is an influential figure in Duke’s campuswide effort to raise $3 billion. From that “Duke Forward” campaign, $250 million is pegged for athletics. Some of that, in addition to facility improvements, will enhance women’s athletics. Duke plans to add softball in 2018, while also adding scholarships in several women’s sports.

Beyond the Duke campus, White has emerged as a highly respected voice within the ACC. He is one of three ADs on the conference’s television committee, which will provide research and shape opinions on the potential of an ACC Network. And he has played an integral role behind the scenes to keep the league stable during the swirl of realignment rumors.
