Fryt Takes First in Pole Vault to Open Outdoor Season

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Duke University track and field teams began the outdoor season Friday at the Wake Forest Open, held at Kentner Stadium. Live results are available through www.flashresults.com

Junior Amy Fryt took first out of 17 competitors in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.95m (12-11.50), nearly 12 inches higher than the second-place finisher. Freshman Emily Mattoon came in third with a jump of 3.50m (11-5.75), while junior Cassie Ludwig cleared 3.35m (10-11.75) for 10th place and freshman Amber Kuntz cleared 3.20m (10-6) to tie for 12th.

In the men's shot put, sophomore Michael Barbas finished third out of 42 with a throw of 16.63m (54-6.75).

Two Blue Devil runners also took part in the 400m dash with Sam Bowler posting a 51.77 time and Michael Stanley ran a 51.90 to finish 64th and 66th, respectively.

Action at the Wake Forest Open will continue tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. with the women's javelin throw and concludes with the 200m dash at 3:30 p.m.
