DURHAM, N.C. - The Duke women's soccer team closed out its regular season with a 4-0 win over Francis Marion on Sunday afternoon.  Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior defender Maddy Haller to learn more about the South Salem, N.Y., native.

GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite class at Duke?
Maddy Haller:  My favorite class at Duke was a class I took with Ashley Rape and Tara Campbell called "The South in Black and White" and we took it at the Tobacco Campus which was really cool. It was in this really neat building which was just a cool building architecturally speaking.  We had a bunch of different teachers and we sang in the class.  It was a really interactive class and it was a lot of people from the Durham community and different schools in the area. NCCU and I think UNC both had students in the class so it was just a really unique class so I think that's what made it so nice.

GoDuke.com: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
MH: We always had a lot of animals so I think I always thought of myself as being a vet or something.  You know, something where I can interact with animals. And since then I've still kind of had that passion in my life but I sort of changed directions a little bit since I got to school and have been taking courses here.

GoDuke.com: What's your favorite spot on campus?
MH: My favorite spot on campus is actually the gothic reading room.  It's in Perkins Library, it's actually upstairs, and it's this really old room.  I think they have pictures of old headmasters but it's like a silent room, like nobody's supposed to talk.  And I don't know I just think it's just a cool looking room aesthetically speaking and I'm really productive when I'm there so usually I only use it during exam times when I really have to be focused.  But it gets me working and I just think it's a cool place to be.

GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
MH: Probably going to the National Championship.  It was really just a cool experience and to be there with the team which I think we had grown so much.  Just being on the team freshman year when we didn't do so well and then three years later we were going to the National Championship game with a team who had really come together and was really connected and I just think it was at that moment that where you just realized "Wow, we've come a long way since three years ago when we were struggling to get wins and here we are at the National Championship."

GoDuke.com: Are there any words of wisdom you can pass on to freshman and future Blue Devils?
MH: Sure, I mean I think knowing that soccer is important and is going to be a big part of your life but that you need to have other things that make you a well-rounded person.  Get involved on campus and get to know different people on campus.  I think just being connected, Duke offers you so many opportunities I think.  Take every one you can.  I wish I had taken more.  Just now that I'm a senior looking back, there's always things you're like, "Man, I'm involved but I could have been so much more involved."  Duke offers you just so many opportunities and just take as many as you can take.

GoDuke.Com : What sport other than your own would you play?
MH: Probably lacrosse. I grew up around lacrosse. It's huge in my area. All three of my brothers played it and my sister actually played it for a year in college. So, I just kind of grew up around the sport. I enjoy it more than even soccer. I enjoy taking a lacrosse stick out and just throwing it around and I don't think you can beat that. When I was younger me and my dad and my brothers used to go out right before dinner for like an hour and throw around the lacrosse ball, when I probably should have been practicing soccer but I wasn't. So if there's anything I would play it would be lacrosse.

GoDuke.com: What is one possession you can't live without?
MH: My pillow. I need it to sleep.  I have very weird sleep habits so I just need everything to be perfect in order for me to get a good night's sleep so my pillow is definitely very important to me.

GoDuke.com: Do you take it on the road?
MH: Sometimes, sometimes I don't.  Sometimes I used a blanket.  I have a blanket too that I sleep with.

GoDuke.Com:  Eat-in or take-out?
MH:  Eat-in.  Family-style.  Sit at the kitchen table with a bunch of friends or my family.  I don't think you can beat that.
