GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Makenzie Hommel: Our 2011 season we made it to the final four. That was an amazing experience, especially because it was in my hometown [Setauket, N.Y.].
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite part about being a Duke student-athlete?
MH: I just love to be busy, so I think that being able to balance both [academics and athletics] has given me the opportunity to prepare for the real world. This summer, working at an internship, I was able to juggle many things and I think that having the ability to go on the road, do homework, play games, practice and be busy all the time is something that has prepared me more than I could imagine.
GoDuke.com: What has been your favorite class at Duke?
MH: The most beneficial class I've taken was Entrepreneurship because I learned so much. It was definitely one of my hardest classes, but I learned the most in it. The most fun classes I took were theater classes like Intro to Acting and Improv.
GoDuke.com: Are there any words of wisdom you'd like to pass along to freshmen and future Blue Devils?
MH: Enjoy every single moment. When someone tells you it flies by, it really does. I'm sitting here right now, and I'm like, 'Where did the time go?' Take advantage of everything possible. Go to sporting events, go outside of campus to experience Durham, and just literally embrace every single second you're here.
GoDuke.com: When did you first start playing lacrosse?
MH: I started in second grade and my second grade coach turned out to be my high school coach. I was able to play with a lot of great players growing up and then I played on a club team, which I still have friends from today. They are at a lot of amazing schools as well.
GoDuke.com: Who has been the biggest influence on your life?
MH: My family as a whole and then my parents for different reasons. My dad has never missed a game in my life. My mom is more the emotional side, and my dad is more the athletic side, so they bring a nice combination as a whole to support me.
GoDuke.com: If you won the lottery, what is the first thing you would do?
MH: Maybe vacation, go to Hawaii.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite midnight snack?
MH: Probably pizza - I love pizza.
GoDuke.com: What sport other than lacrosse would you play?
MH: Tennis. I have a tennis court at my house and we play casually. I'm not great at it by any means, but I like to do it. It's fun.
