DURHAM, N.C. - Duke University redshirt junior Kim DeCesare earned Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athlete of the Week, after leading third-seeded Duke to NCAA Tournament victories over 24th-ranked Miami (Ohio) and second-ranked Virginia.
DeCesare, who is from Massapequa Park, N.Y., totaled back-to-back first half goals to open the match against Miami (Ohio) on Friday as the Blue Devils went on to post a 4-1 victory over the RedHawks in the NCAA Sweet 16. The game-winning goal for DeCesare was her fourth of the season.
She closed the weekend with two goals at second-ranked Virginia on Sunday. The 5-11 forward notched the first goal of the match in the ninth minute to put the Blue Devils ahead 1-0. She then added her second goal in the 89th minute to seal the 3-1 victory for Duke and advance the Blue Devils to the NCAA Elite Eight for the fourth time out of the last six years.
With her four goals on the weekend, DeCesare now owns a tied for team-high 16 along with Laura Weinberg. The duo of DeCesare and Weinberg has combined for a school-record 32 goals on the year and the tandem is the highest scoring duo in the nation this season. DeCesare now owns six career NCAA Tournament goals over the last two years. Her 38 points in 2012 ranks as the fourth-highest single-season point total in school history.
Duke will next take on No. 1 seed Penn State on Friday, Nov. 23 at 7:00 p.m., in the NCAA Elite Eight. The winner will advance to the NCAA College Cup in San Diego, Calif.
