Duke sophomore Christina Gibbons was recently named to the United States U-20 World Cup team that will travel to Canada this week.  The native of Raleigh, N.C., took some time away to chat with GoDuke.com about making the team and representing the U.S.

When you were heading to the U.S. U-20 training camp, what were your expectations going into it?
“I didn't really expect too much going into camp because it was only my fourth National Team camp. I obviously wanted to make the roster, but I was trying to be realistic in case I didn't make it.”

How did you feel you played during camp and what position did you play most of the time?
“I feel I played well both in trainings as well as our games when we were in Seattle. I played mostly outside back, both left and right.”

When you found out you made the team and would be representing the U.S. at the World Cup, what were your thoughts?
“It felt surreal and took a while to actually sink in. It didn't really hit me that I had made the team until the roster was published the next day and people started congratulating me.”

What will it mean to you to be able to wear the U.S. Soccer jersey for the first time at the World Cup?
“The idea of playing with the U.S. crest on my jersey in a World Cup just gives me the chills so I'm sure that stepping on the field for the first time in Canada will be an unbelievable experience.”

During the training camp, you were able to spend some time with Duke teammate Kelly Cobb.  How nice was that to see her?
“Yes, we actually saw each other a good amount and it was so nice to be able to sit down and talk to her about everything going on because she has been through the process before and she gave me great advice.”

How tough will it be for you to be away from your Duke team when preseason camp opens?
“It will be pretty tough because the Duke team obviously means a lot to me and I will miss my teammates a lot, but I know they will be working hard and it makes me that much more excited to play with them again when I get back.”

How do you think playing on this World Cup team will help you when come back to your Blue Devil squad for the 2014 campaign?
“I think it will give me a lot of experience coming into this season playing with as well as against some fantastic talent from different countries. Every practice and game is learning opportunity and a chance to get better so I'm excited to hopefully keep improving.”
