EARLY OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION:Sean Renfree’s 77-yard pass completion to Jamison Crowder in the first quarter was Duke’s longest offensive play of the season and was also the longest offensive play given up by Clemson’s defense this year.
DUKE REACHES 300 POINTS: With 20 points against Clemson, the Blue Devils have totaled 307 points this season, eclipsing the 300-point barrier for the year ... The 2012 squad is the 10th team in school history to score 300-plus points, including the third in five seasons under head coach David Cutcliffe ... Other 300-point Blue Devil teams occurred in 1941 (327), 1943 (335), 1982 (307), 1987 (301), 1988 (324), 1989 (356), 1994 (360), 2009 (302) and 2010 (303).
CAUSING TURNOVERS: The Blue Devils’ defensive unit caused four turnovers for the third time this season (versus Wake Forest and Florida State), intercepting three Clemson passes and recovering one fumble…the three interceptions marked the first time Duke has accomplished that feat since playing at Virginia Tech on November 22, 2008.
WR DUO TOPS 700 YARDS EACH: With 167 yards on the night, Jamison Crowder topped the 700-yard barrier for the season to give the Blue Devils their seventh duo in school history with 700-plus receiving yards … Crowder now has 812 receiving yards on the year while teammate Conner Vernon has 808 yards … Previous Duke tandems to accomplish the feat include Henley Carter (892) & Wes Chesson (794) in 1968, Chris Castor (952) & Mark Militello (725) in 1982, Scottie Montgomery (793) & Richmond Flowers (704) in 1998, Donovan Varner (1,047) & Conner Vernon (746) in 2009, Vernon (973) & Varner (736) in 2010 and Vernon (956) & Varner (713) in 2011 … Earlier this season, Crowder & Vernon became the fourth Blue Devil tandem to post five or more receiving TDs in the same season.
CB LEE BUTLER: Finished the game with three tackles including two solo stops … Picked up his first interception of the season, and fourth of his career, at the end of the second quarter.
S JORDON BYAS: Finished the game with 15 tackles, seven of which were solo … reached double figures in the tackle column for the fifth time in the past six games … after missing the first three games while recovering from knee surgery, has posted an average of 10.6 tackles per game.
S WALT CANTY: Pushed his team-leading tackle total to 89 through 10 games in 2012…had two forced turnovers during the second quarter including his first interception of the season and third of his career.
CB ROSS COCKRELL: Finished the game with four tackles, including three solo stops … his interception at the beginning of the third quarter is his fifth of the season, leading the ACC, and the ninth of his career, placing him in a tie for eighth on Duke’s career interceptions list.
QB BRANDON CONNETTE: Completed his only pass attempt of the game for a 17-yard touchdown…threw his second career touchdown pass to David Reeves for 17 yards in the second quarter.
WR JAMISON CROWDER: Finished the game with seven receptions for 167 yards …his 167-yard performance is tied for the 19th-most receiving yards in a single game in Duke history…topped the 100-yard plateau for the fourth time this season … the four 100-yard receiving games match the sixth-highest single-season total in Duke history… his 77-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter is the longest reception of his career… the long reception is his fourth of the year placing him in a tie for first with most touchdown receptions of 50+ yards in a single season…it also places him second on Duke’s all-time list for the most touchdown receptions of 50+ yards in his career.
RB JELA DUNCAN: Rushed 6 times for 28 yards … moved into a tie for 14th place on Duke’s single-season list for rushing yards by a freshman … for the season, has rushed 87 times for 413 yards, and his per attempt average of 4.75 ranks 5th on Duke’s single-season chart for rookies.
LB DAVID HELTON: Finished the game with a career-high 10 tackles.
K ROSS MARTIN: Totaled eight points on two field goals and two PATs … pushed his team-leading point total to 83, which also ranks fourth for Duke single season records … extended own single-season scoring record for Duke freshmen to 83 points … extended own single-season field goals made record for Duke freshmen to 16 … kicked two field goals over 45 yards including a career-long 47-yard field goal in the third quarter and is currently 4-for-4 on field goal attempts of over 40 yards … the field goal was his 16th of the season, which moved him into a tie for third place in Duke’s single-season record book and stands 11th on the career charts … his season total of 35 PATs ranks fourth on Duke’s all-time single-season charts.
P WILL MONDAY: Punted nine times for 359 yards and a 39.9 per kick average … on the season, has now punted 60 times for 2,630 yards and a 43.8 average … season average of 43.8 ranks fourth on Duke’s single-season chart.
S DWAYNE NORMAN: Finished the game with nine tackles, including six solo tackles …he was also credited with one pass breakup.
TE DAVID REEVES: Finished the game with two receptions for 21 yards… caught his second career touchdown in the second quarter off a 17-yard pass from quarterback Brandon Connette.
QB SEAN RENFREE: Completed 23-of-39 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown … pushed his career passing yardage total to 8,477 and is 15th on the ACC’s all-time list … now sits 68 yards shy of NC State’s Russell Wilson for 14th place on the chart … increased his career pass completion total to 801 and is sixth on the ACC’s all-time chart… the 77-yard pass completion to Crowder in the first quarter was the longest pass completion of his Duke career… extends own Duke record for consecutive games with at least 10 pass completions to 32… has now thrown for 150 or more yards in 31 of the last 33 games dating back to the beginning of the 2010 season… reached the 2,000-yard plateau for the third consecutive season, and has now thrown for 2,125 yards on the year … The three 2,000-yard passing seasons match the second-highest total in school history, equaling performances by Ben Bennett & Spence Fischer … Thaddeus Lewis holds the school record with four 2,000-yard passing campaigns… establishes Duke career record with his 26th career game with 200 or more passing yards, breaking the mark of 25 previously held by Ben Bennett.
WR DESMOND SCOTT: Caught two passes for seven yards … extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one pass reception to 36, marking the third-longest streak in Duke history trailing Conner Vernon (45; active) & Donovan Varner (37) … active streak is the seventh-longest among active players nationally … pushed his streak of consecutive games with at least two catches to 18, marking the fifth-longest such streak in school history … has now caught two or more passes in 32 games, marking the seventh-highest career total in Duke history.
WR CONNER VERNON: Finished the day with five receptions for 47 yards…extended own school record for most games with two or more receptions with 44 … equaled the ACC record consecutive games with at least one reception to 45, matching the total set by North Carolina’s Corey Holliday … the streak is also the longest active streak in the nation … extended his streak of consecutive games with at least two receptions to 25 – the third-longest streak in Duke history behind Hines (28) and Varner (27).
