SAN DIEGO – The Duke rowing team’s second varsity eight took third place in the Petite Final of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, and the varsity eight and varsity four both competed in the Grand Final of their respective competitions on the second day of the San Diego Crew Classic in Mission Bay.

The Duke 2V8 crew of Simone Pitre (cox), Caroline Williams, Julie Rohde, Victoria Tsamis, Katie Burke, Allison Beattie, Nicole Antoine, Sophia Staal and Kaila Perez recorded their best time of the season in the Petite Final, clocking a 6:53.58 to finish less than two seconds behind runner-up Iowa (6:51.75). No. 19 Washington St. won the race with a time of 6:44.80.

In the Grand Final of the Jessop-Whittier Cup, Duke’s varsity eight took sixth place behind five top-10 teams with a time of 6:41.23. That mark was Duke’s second fastest of the season, trailing only the 6:35.11 the Blue Devils turned in Saturday. Finishing ahead of Duke were No. 6 Southern California (6:25.30), No. 2 Cal (6:28.04), No. 1 Virginia (6:28.71), No. 9 UCLA (6:30.25) and No. 7 Washington (6:33.33). Powering Duke’s varsity eight were Caroline Kiritsy (cox), Grace Cassidy, Claire Vannelli, Emily Theys, Katie Dukovich, Tara Dalton, Laura Sciarrino, Alex Stonehill and Hannah Hewitt, who set Duke’s two fastest times of the season in their first races together this season.

In the varsity four, the Duke crew of Ashleigh Anne McKinney (cox), Mary Wilson, Rachel Wolsfelt, Dana Lerro and Sydney Johnson finished with a 7:44.62 to place seventh. That time came one day after those five set a season-best with a mark of 7:36.40 on the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic to advance to the event’s Grand Final. Duke finished behind USC, UCLA, Washington, Virginia and No. 19 Washington State in the race.

Up next for the Blue Devils is a trip to Clemson, S.C., to take part in the Clemson Invitational. In Duke’s last trip to Clemson, on March 9 this season, the Blue Devils upended the host Tigers in the varsity eight.
