PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Duke women’s tennis team registered a 4-1 record on Tuesday as the Blue Devils opened play at the 2013 Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championship at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
In doubles action, the 31st-ranked Duke tandem of Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland notched a tight, 8-7 (8-6) win over 25th-ranked of Zsofi Susanyi and Klara Fabikova of California. Goldfeld/Mulholland will next face Pepperdine’s 43rd-ranked Lorraine Guillermo and Alejandra Granillo on Wednesday.
Beatrice Capra, who was competing for the first time this season, cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over 68th-ranked Granillo of Pepperdine in the first round of qualifying. Capra, who is out of Ellicott City, Md., then downed Stanford’s 73rd ranked Elen Tsay, 6-0, 6-2.
Following her doubles victory in the morning, Goldfeld took the court for singles and totaled a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win over 89th-ranked Allison Falkin of Illinois in the first round before falling, 1-6, 2-6, to North Carolina’s Hayley Carter.
