7. Duke Athletics Hall of Fame

Duke enshrined five individuals – Ben Bennett (football), Jenny Chuasiriporn (women’s golf), Bobby Hurley (men’s basketball), Mike Krzyzewski (coach) and Vanessa Webb (women’s tennis) –  into its Athletics Hall of Fame on September 9.

Bennett, a native of Sunnyvale, Calif., quarterbacked the Blue Devils from 1980-83 and capped a terrific career with ACC Player of the Year and third team All-America accolades as a senior.  Still one of just two players in ACC history to earn both the conference’s Rookie and Player of the Year awards, Bennett graduated as the NCAA’s all-time leading passer and currently ranks sixth on the league’s career passing chart with 9,614 yards.  He continues to hold or share 21 Duke passing records.

Chuasiriporn, a native of Timonium, Md., was a four-time All-America selection as a member of Duke’s women’s golf program from 1996-99, earning first team accolades and ACC Player of the Year honors in each of her final three seasons.  Chuasiriporn helped the Blue Devils to four ACC championships as well as the 1999 NCAA title.

Hurley, a native of Jersey City, N.J., guided Duke to a pair of national championships during his four-year (1990-93) career with the men’s basketball program.  Playing in 140 career games, he amassed career totals of 1,731 points, 1,076 assists, 306 rebounds and 202 steals, with the assist total continuing to rank first all-time in NCAA history.

Krzyzewski has called Duke home since being hired as the university’s head men’s basketball coach on March 18, 1980.  Since then, the 1969 West Point graduate has directed the Blue Devils to four NCAA crowns, 27 NCAA Tournament appearances, 13 ACC regular season crowns and 13 ACC Tournament championships.  A 12-time national coach of the year honoree and member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2001, Krzyzewski has mentored seven national players of the year, 23 All-Americans, eight ACC Players of the Year, 74 All-ACC selections and 40 NBA draft picks.

Webb, a native of Toronto, Canada, was a two-time ACC and ITA National Player of the Year honoree in women’s tennis in 1998 and 1999.  A four-time All-America choice (1996-97-98-99), Webb helped the Blue Devils to four ACC regular season and tournament championships, four NCAA Tournament berths and an appearance in the 1998 national title match.  As a junior, Webb won 44 singles matches, captured the NCAA individual singles crown with a straight set victory over Stanford’s Ania Bleszynski and received the ACC’s Garber Award as the conference’s top female athlete.

The induction pushed the total to 124 members in the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame, dating back to the inaugural ceremony in 1975.
