5. Duke Basketball Visits China & Dubai
The Duke men’s basketball team embarked on a 13-day foreign tour to China and Dubai that covered nearly 20,000 miles from August 14-27. The Blue Devils went undefeated on their journey, besting the Chinese Olympic Team three times (77-64 in Kunshan, 78-66 in Shanghai and 93-78 in Beijing) before knocking off the United Arab Emirates National Team, 86-66, in Dubai to finish the trip.
In addition to the on court success, Duke also was able to have an amazing cultural experience with visits to The Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the 2008 Olympic Green in Beijing, the Bird’s Nest, Water Cube and the Burj Kalifa (the world’s tallest building) as well as stops at traditional Chinese pearl markets and silk shops and a souk in Dubai. The Blue Devils also took part in a Nike Sports Festival event in Shanghai and visited the 200-acre future site the Duke Kunshan University campus that is set to open in the fall of 2012.
“It was a fabulous tour on and off the court – for basketball, for education, for bonding, and for representing our university,” said head coach Mike Krzyzewski. “Seeing the campus in Kunshan being built was really a neat thing. It is half way there and will be called Duke Kunshan University. That’s a pretty cool thing.”
