DURHAM, N.C. - The men's cross country team will stay local this weekend, competing at the Great American Cross Country Festival on Friday, September 28.  Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior member Mike Moverman to learn more about the Easton, Mass., native.

GoDuke.com: What has been your proudest moment at Duke?
Mike Moverman (MM): When we won the Roy Griak Championship in Minnesota my sophomore year. It was a huge race and it was our first big win as a team since I got here and it was great to celebrate with everybody.

GoDuke.com: What is your favorite part about being a Duke student-athlete?
MM: Being able to represent such a great school and to compete at such a prestigious school. I feel lucky to be able to do it and that is what I think about every time I step to the line.

GoDuke.com: What has been your most challenging class?
MM: Probably Chem 101. I came in as a freshman and I thought I was going to dominate school just like I did in high school. But I got dominated in this class because I didn't study enough. But it definitely helped me for my other classes because it taught me how to study and to take things a little more seriously.

GoDuke.com: Tell us about a time when you first started playing your sport.
MM: I had never done any competitive running before my freshmen year of high school. I had played basketball and football up until 9th grade.  To get in shape for basketball season, a couple of my friends were like, "Do you want to do Cross Country?", and I ended up being good. After that I have just been all running.

GoDuke.com: As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?
MM: A long time ago I wanted to be in the NBA, but when I realized I wasn't going to be 6'5", I knew that goal was out the window. I think I wanted to be a doctor from a pretty young age too. My dad's a doctor so I was able to see him do surgeries and that kind of stuff. It was cool to see him helping people and helping them get better.

GoDuke.com: Who has been the biggest influence on your life?
MM: I would say both my parents. Both of them really believe in me and they come to a lot of my races. They fly down, we live in Massachusetts, and they try to get to as many races as they can. We are always on the phone talking about strategy and this and that. They are huge supporters. Also my high school coach was a big influence early on. He helped me get the work ethic I have today, so that really helped a lot.

GoDuke.com: Do you have any hidden talents?
MM: I played the piano for twelve years in high school. I haven't played too much in college, but it is always something I like doing.

GoDuke.com: Do you like mountains or beach more?
MM: Definitely mountains. I like going on vacations and spending time in pretty areas up in the mountains with lakes and stuff like that, rather than sitting on the beach.

GoDuke.com: What kind of music do you have on your iPod?
MM: I have a lot of weird stuff; I'm all over the place. I've gotten into a lot of electro/techno sort of stuff. I also like Maroon 5, Blink182 and all the standard bands also.

GoDuke.com: Who is your favorite athlete?
MM: I would say Tom Brady. I'm from Boston; I live about five or 10 miles from the stadium in Foxboro. I also like the Celtics, but the Red Sox are a bit lower on my list.
