Duke junior Ashley Camano will keep a weekly blog for the 2012 season, giving Duke fans an inside look at life on the Blue Devil field hockey team.

Look for Ashley's blog every week during the season on

As we take to the field this weekend and close out our long stretch of home games, we're heading out with more of a purpose than simply scoring shots, earning corners and thwarting our opponent's attacking opportunities.  Tomorrow we'll face a competitor from outside the ACC with Kent State,  but the match is going to be a fight for more than simply a victory toward our seasonal record.  This Sunday, both the Duke Blue Devils and the Kent State Golden Flashes will be raising money for perhaps the greatest victory of all time-the victory against cancer.

Cancer is an opponent whose power needn't be so potent anymore. Players, coaches, fans from all teams undoubtedly have stories about the effect that this disease, in whatever form, has had on themselves or a loved one.  Fighting cancer and collecting donations for a cure is not a conversation where one team wears dark and one team wears light. Finding a cure is a universal push, a peculiar matter where two teams, teams who base their work every day in defeating their competition, band together for a common cause against a common enemy.  In support of the third annual "Stick it to Cancer" campaign by the National Foundation for Cancer Research, 22 players in opposing colors will compete head to head, but collect heart to heart in an effort to have a hand (or a stick) in finally finding victory with a cure.

The Duke University field hockey team will be collecting donations to the NFCR on Sunday during our 1p.m. match at Jack Katz Stadium.  Your support on the sidelines is and always will be appreciated by the girls in black and blue, we thank you for any support for this year's "Stick it to Cancer" game-together, we can all play on the same team in this battle.

From Durham, Ashley Camano
