The Duke Football Summer Spotlight runs every Tuesday and Thursday on GoDuke.com and features interviews with members of the reigning ACC Coastal Division Champion Blue Devils.
DURHAM -- This week’s Duke Football Summer Spotlight features sophomore cornerback Bryon Fields, who made an instant impact in the secondary as a true freshman. The Charlotte, N.C., native appeared in all 14 games with one start last season while helping shore up a defensive backfield that returned just one starter from the 2012 squad. Fields’ play, which yielded 42 tackles, 1.0 tackle for loss, 1.0 sack and six pass breakups, was key in helping the Blue Devils hold opponent quarterbacks to a 129.84 efficiency rating.
Fields registered three pass breakups in Duke’s historic 13-10 win at No. 16 Virginia Tech to key a stifling defensive effort in which the Blue Devils forced the Hokies into four interceptions and recorded 10 pass breakups. He enters the 2014 season as the presumed starting cornerback opposite fellow sophomore Breon Borders.
Duke returns 44 letterwinners (20 offense; 21 defense; three special teams) and 17 starters (eight offense; six defense, three special teams) from a squad that went 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the ACC while reaching the Chick-fil-A Bowl a year ago.
