DURHAM, N.C.—With four days of preseason camp under its belt, the Duke men’s soccer team welcomes George Washington University to campus Sunday for the first of two exhibition matches the Blue Devils will play over the course of the next week. Duke and the Colonials kick off at 1 p.m. at the field located on Highway 751 on Duke’s campus.
The Blue Devils reported to campus, Tuesday Aug. 13 and held their first practice the following morning. Duke returns 23 players from the 2012 squad and welcomes five newcomers to the program. Captains Sebastien Ibeagha and Sean Davis headline the group of returners. Ibeagha is a preseason All-America pick, while Davis is one of the highest rated midfielders in the country.
Four-year starter Rob Dolot returns for his final season with the Blue Devils as do seven other seniors, including Ibeagha. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex Long joins the squad after playing three seasons at South Carolina, while Jimmy Doll, Brody Huitema, Jared Golestani and Seo-In Kim are the rookie additions.
Duke is coming off an 8-8-2 season in 2012 and lost just one player to graduation. Ibeagha was the top scorer a year ago as well as anchoring the backline to nine shutouts and a 0.70 goals against average.
George Washington returns return 15 letterwinners and eight starters from last season's squad while welcoming 10 newcomers to the roster. GW will be led offensively by seniors Tyler Ranalli and Bailey Hinners, who combined to score five goals and 11 points in 2012. Also back is junior defender Andri Alexandersson, the reigning team MVP who played in all but 95 minutes last season.
The Blue Devils also host Old Dominion in an exhibition match, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at Koskinen Stadium. Duke officially opens the season Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. against Rutgers in the John Rennie Nike Classic.
