DURHAM, N.C. - An 80,000-square foot building featuring a 120-yard football playing surface will be named the Pascal Field House, Duke Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin White announced on Thursday.

The athletic department's latest facility is named for Bob Pascal, a 1956 graduate of Duke and a former All-America running back for the Blue Devils, who provided a lead gift of $6 million for the project.  The structure, which is scheduled to be ready for use next week, is located within the Brooks Practice Facility.

A dedication ceremony has been scheduled at the facility for September 2.  The Blue Devils open the 2011 season the following evening by hosting Richmond at 7 p.m.

"Bob Pascal, a leader on the field and in the history of Duke's football program, has taken the lead in making the Pascal Field House possible," said Duke University President Richard H. Brodhead.  "We are grateful to Bob Pascal for this wonderful gift, which will benefit not only the football program but all Duke students who enjoy sports and athletic competition."

The building, designed and constructed by The Beck Group with primary use scheduled for Duke's football and campus recreation programs, has a 65-foot ceiling at its peak and also includes a filming tower, retractable goalpost and locker room facility for game officials.

"Bob Pascal, during his time at Duke, was truly a champion and this transformational gift will help Duke Athletics continue to build champions," said White.  "To be sure, the Pascal Fieldhouse will impact not only football student-athletes, but also students all across the University who participate in campus recreation via club sports and intramural programs.  We are extremely appreciative to Bob for his unmatched passion and continued dedication to this great institution."

In addition to having a dynamic impact on Duke's football program, the indoor facility will significantly augment the school's Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department where over 5,000 students participate in club and intramural sports annually.

"Bob Pascal made a tremendous impact as a player when Duke was a force on the national college football scene," Duke head coach David Cutcliffe said.  "He has continued that drive to help the resurrection of our program, and we are grateful for his loyalty and support.  This naming of our indoor facility is proof of his unwavering commitment.  Men like Bob Pascal make Duke University - and particularly Duke football - so special."

A native of Bloomfield, N.J., and current resident of Easton, Md., Pascal is the owner of the Pascal Group. He has four daughters, Catherine Anne, Margaret, Clara and Robin. Catherine Anne is a 1979 Duke graduate. A standout on the gridiron at Duke from 1953-55, Pascal was a two-time first team All-ACC pick (1954-55) and first team All-America selection (1955).

He helped the Blue Devils to a three-year record of 20-8-3 including three ACC championships and a 34-7 win over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl on January 1, 1955. Pascal, who served as a Maryland State Senator (1970-74) and Anne Arundel County Executive (1974-82), rushed for 1,523 career yards with 19 touchdowns and was a third round pick of the Baltimore Colts in the 1956 NFL Draft.
