DURHAM, N.C. – Headlined by 46 returning lettermen from last season’s bowl squad, the Duke football program opens its preseason camp Sunday with the annual official reporting to campus. The team’s first practice is set for Monday evening at the Brooks Practice Facility.
“This year, we have a purpose,” said senior running back Juwan Thompson. “Last year, we didn’t finish too well but we accomplished some goals. We want to accomplish all of our goals. So this year, we have our goals of wanting to win a bowl game. Besides making it to a bowl game this year, we want to win the bowl game, have a winning record and make a run for the ACC championship.”
Last year, Duke posted a 6-7 overall record and played in the program’s first bowl game since the 1994 season. Two-time team captain and three-year starting quarterback Sean Renfree was the team’s MVP after throwing for over 3,000 yards, and the Scottsdale, Ariz., native was a seventh round draft choice of the Atlanta Falcons this past spring. The Blue Devils will enter the 2013 campaign with redshirt junior Anthony Boone at the helm of the offense.
“Going into camp, for me personally, I want to keep tempo and be a voice on the field and make sure guys are staying in it because it’s a long process,” Boone noted. “Guys get tired and their minds wander so it is my job to just make sure everybody’s in it, and just be efficient off the field when it comes to extra film study.
“Right now, I’ve been here for four years so mistakes aren’t really something I’m looking for – to be crisp and not have mental errors is what I’m looking for,” Boone continued. “As a team, we’ll strive to be efficient as a unit, offensively and defensively – get the right calls, get the right checks, have 11 guys on the field flying around and having a good time and competing at a high level.”
Thompson relishes the camp experience.
“We’re kind of locked down in a sense,” Thompson said. “We stay in a hotel. We’re together for various hours of the day and we have these bonding experiences where we have a lot of laughter together. This time lets us build together and build the strength and the trust amongst one another, knowing that we’re going to have our ups and downs for the next three weeks. It’s going to be a great bond for the next three weeks, knowing that there’s no outside influences – you just have your brothers and your coaches.”
