DURHAM, N.C. -- The Blue Devils returned to the practice field on Monday morning for a simulated scrimmage covering 90 snaps in the Pascal Field House.
“We had exceptional play at times on both sides of the football,” commented Duke head coach David Cutcliffe. “It was very competitive, and that is always a good sign. We played with energy, and our overall effort was close to special. My concerns were critical penalties – on both sides – and too many wasted plays on offense that resulted in lost yardage or no gain.
“We limited the number of snaps for our starters by design, but a few individuals did catch the eyes of the coaches,” Cutcliffe continued. “Dezmond Johnson showed up at defensive end and Chris Holmes made some plays at linebacker. Offensively, both (Josh) Snead and (Shaquille) Powell were impressive running the football and I thought Matt Skura had a good day. And our three top top quarterbacks (Anthony Boone, Brandon Connette & Thomas Sirk) were very good.”
The Blue Devils will resume spring drills on Wednesday morning. The Blue Devils return 44 lettermen and 17 starters off last year’s squad that won a school record 10 games. The 2013 campaign also included the ACC Coastal Division championship, a berth in the Dr Pepper ACC Championship game and an appearance in the 46th annual Chick-fil-A Bowl against Texas A&M.
Duke will hold its annual Spring Game on Saturday, March 1 at 12 noon in Wallace Wade Stadium. Season tickets are on sale and may be purchased at GoDuke.com or by calling 919-681-BLUE (2583).
