DURHAM, N.C. – Duke linebacker Kelby Brown, safety Jeremy Cash, wide receiver Jamison Crowder and offensive guard Laken Tomlinson were named to the 2014 Preseason All-ACC Team by a vote of attending media members at the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Football Kickoff at Grandover Resort.
Duke’s four selections were the second most in the league, trailing only reigning national champion Florida State’s nine. The Blue Devils, who won the ACC Coastal Division in 2013 with a 6-2 league record and a 10-4 overall mark, were also picked to finish second in the Coastal Division in the media’s Preseason All-ACC Poll released Monday.
Crowder, a 5-9, 175-pound senior who was an All-America second team selection at punt returner in 2013, was the top vote-getter among league wide receivers. A watch list selection for the Biletnikoff, Walter Camp, Maxwell and Hornung Awards, Crowder enters 2014 as the ACC’s active leader in receiving yards and receptions. He hauled in an ACC-record 108 catches for 1,360 yards and eight touchdowns in 2013 to go with one rushing touchdown, two punt return touchdowns and an average of 16.04 yards per punt return.
Cash, a 6-2, 205-pound redshirt junior who also appeared on the preseason watch lists for the Bednarik Award, Nagurski Trophy and Jim Thorpe Award, enters 2014 as Duke’s starter at the Strike safety position. In 2013, he amassed 121 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, four interceptions, four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. A 2013 All-America second team selection by USA Today and an All-ACC first team pick by the league’s media, Cash’s 121 tackles were the second-most in the ACC, trailing only teammate David Helton’s 133.
Brown, a 6-2, 230-pound redshirt senior, ranked second in the ACC with 8.8 tackles per game in 2013 on the way to All-ACC first team honors. He added 11.0 tackles for loss, 1.0 quarterback sack, two interceptions, two caused fumbles, two fumble recoveries, two pass breakups and eight QB pressures just one year after missing the entire 2012 season due to a knee injury. He is on the watch lists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Butkus Award, Bednarik Award and Rotary Lombardi Award.
Tomlinson, a 6-3, 320-pound redshirt senior, anchored a Duke offense that established school single-season records for total first downs (298), offensive yards (5,966) and points (459) in 2013. A second team All-ACC pick last season, Tomlinson, who was also named a preseason All-America second team selection by Athlon Sports and Phil Steele, is entering his fourth season as Duke’s starter at right guard.
The Blue Devils open the season on August 30 against Elon at Wallace Wade Stadium. Tickets are available at http://www.goduke.com/footballtix or by calling (919) 681-BLUE.
