DURHAM, N.C. – Quarterback Sean Renfree accounted for three touchdowns and running back Patrick Kurunwune spearheaded the ground attack with 154 yards on eight carries to highlight Duke’s 75-snap scrimmage on Saturday morning at Wallace Wade Stadium.

“We had two hours of solid work today,” said head coach David Cutcliffe.  “We got enough snaps to get a great evaluation.  The frustration is that you are out there with five or six defensive starters not available.  We’re going to look at this tape and we’ll see that there are some young folks that got better.  One of the things I’m more interested in right now is who made some plays on defense.”

Renfree was seven-of-13 through the air for 129 yards with scoring strikes of 18 yards to tight end Cooper Helfet and 55 yards to wideout Brandon Braxton.  The rising junior signal-caller also rushed for a three-yard touchdown.

Brandon Connette also threw for two touchdowns, finding both tight end Braxton Deaver (31 yards) and wide receiver Josh Trezvant (27 yards) for scores.  Anthony Boone, who rushed seven times for 79 yards including a 45-yard jaunt, added a 39-yard touchdown pass to running back Juwan Thompson while Sean Schroeder was four-of-five passing for 40 yards.

“I was pleased with our quarterback play today,” Cutcliffe noted.

Kurunwune ripped off runs of 27, 37 and 75 yards en route to averaging an impressive 19.3 yards per attempt.  Fellow running backs Desmond Scott and Thompson added 50 and 41 yards on the ground, respectively.

“I thought we ran the ball really well today,” Renfree said.  “I think it has to do with being multiple, and mostly it has to do with the performance of our offensive line.  They did a great job.  We’ve got a lot of good running backs and if you get holes for them, they’re dangerous.  That was lot of fun to see.”

Thompson (62 yards) and wideout Conner Vernon (42 yards) led all receivers with three receptions each while Braxton finished with two grabs for 63 yards.

Safety Jordon Byas headlined the Duke defensive unit with two pass breakups, one caused fumble and one fumble recovery.  Defensive tackle Jamal Bruce chipped in a tackle for loss while linebacker C.J. France and defensive end Nick Sink combined on one quarterback sack.

Duke returns to the practice field on Tuesday.  The Blue Devils will host the program’s annual Spring Game on Saturday, March 26 at Wallace Wade Stadium.
