DURHAM, N.C. – One day after being transported to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Ga., critically injured Duke wide receiver Blair Holliday had a phone conversation with Blue Devil head coach David Cutcliffe on Tuesday.

“It was a joyous day in the Yoh Football Center as we had the entire staff in the office for a short phone call with Blair,” Cutcliffe said.  “We had him on speakerphone, and it was just great to hear his voice – a sound that absolutely filled the room with exuberance.  We talked about the rehabilitation process and how important it is, and when I asked him if he understood how much we loved him, he responded with a confident ‘yes’.”

Holliday also exchanged a phone call with his parents, Leslie and Rick, on Tuesday.

“We are so thankful to everyone for their thoughts and prayers,” said Leslie Holliday, Blair’s mother.  “Hearing Blair’s voice was so special.  He is fighting through this just like we knew he would, and to have the support of so many family members and friends is just amazing.  I told him that I loved him, and to hear the response of ‘I love you too, Mom’, was truly an inspiration.”

A native of Sherman Oaks, Calif., Blair Holliday was injured in a watercraft accident on North Carolina’s Lake Tillery on July 4.  After spending over four weeks at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, N.C., he was moved on Monday to Atlanta’s Shepherd Center, a world-renowned rehabilitation hospital, specializing in medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injury and brain injury.  A private, not-for-profit hospital founded in 1975, Shepherd Center is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top 10 rehabilitation hospitals in the nation.

A trust endowment has been established to assist the family with medical and rehabilitation expenses. Checks made out to "Blair Holliday Recovery Trust” may be deposited at any Bank of America nationwide.   Interested donors should indicate to bank officials that they would like to make a donation to the Blair Holliday Recovery Trust addressed in California.  In addition, checks made out to “Blair Holliday Recovery Trust” may be mailed to P.O. Box 90559, Durham, N.C., 27708, with attention to Peggy Nelson.
