DAVIDSON, N.C.—Duke University freshman forward Brody Huitema scored with 50 seconds left in the first overtime to lift the Blue Devils to a thrilling 3-2 win over Davidson in men’s non-conference soccer action. Huitema scored twice as Duke registered two second-half goals en route to the overtime victory.

Huitema’s goals were the first of his collegiate career, while rookie Seo-In Kim finished with a pair of assists in the win. Duke’s two second-half goals came in the 68th and 87th minutes to improve to 3-1-2 overall.

"Everything we told them was true," said head coach John Kerr. "We told them they needed to come out and play with intensity and fire. We fell behind 1-0 in the first 30 minutes and then fell behind 2-0 early in the second half. I'm proud of how resilient we were tonight. All of their hard work paid off and we will look to build on this."

After falling behind 2-0 early in the second half, Duke remained composed and mounted a thrilling comeback capped off by Huitema’s overtime score. With the game looking like it was headed into double overtime, Kim broke lose down the left wing and got to the endline. He quickly slotted the ball across the face of the goal and Huitema just touched it home for the golden goal.

Davidson (4-1-1) had the better of play in the early going before the Blue Devils were able to get into a rhythm themselves. Sophomore Luis Rendon had the first looks at goal for Duke, firing a pair of shots wide, while consecutive corner kicks for the Blue Devils came up empty.

Davidson, with Duke on its heel s late in the first half, took advantage and went ahead 1-0 on a Valeriy Sviderskiy header after a service from Chris Pettiglio on the right side.

The Blue Devils regained their composure, but were unable to create quality scoring opportunities in the final 16 minutes as the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Duke held a 10-6 advantage in shots and 4-2 edge in corner kicks after 45 minutes.

Things got more difficult for the Blue Devils as Davidson netted a second score just three minutes into the game. It was Sviderskiy again for the Wildcats. The sophomore forward ran onto a long ball served over the top of the Duke defense and slipped it inside the near post for the 2-0 advantage.

After giving up the early goal, Duke dominated possession and was right on the cusp of finding the back of the net. The Blue Devils continued to press forward and earned a corner kick when a Kim strike was deflected. The freshman midfielder sent the ensuing corner kick to the far post where Huitema headed it home for his first collegiate score.

With the lead cut in half, Duke continued to search for the equalizer. Rendon sliced through the Davidson defense with just over eight to play, but his shot was gobbled up by Davidson goalie Matt Pacifici.

The hard work and constant effort paid off for the Blue Devils in the 87th minute when Nick Palodichuk took a through ball from Mathers and slid it past Pacifici to send the game into overtime. The goal was Palodichuk’s second of the year and marked the second time this season the Blue Devils have tied a game late in the second half.

Duke held a 22-11 advantage in shots for the game and a 10-5 edge in corner kicks. The three goals are the most for the Blue Devils this season. In goal, Long make four saves for Duke and Pacifici had six stops for the Wildcats.

The Blue Devils return to action Friday night against new ACC foe Syracuse at 7 p.m.
