DURHAM, N.C. -- Recently, GoDuke.com sat down with senior Will Boeckman to learn more about the Columbus, Ohio native.
GoDuke.com: Name your three favorite things about being a student-athlete at Duke.
Will Boeckman: Being busy all the time. I really like not having any free time and staying on my toes. The school spirit, as well. Being a part of Duke University and that experience has been great. Having people congratulate you after a game. That’s definitely been a huge part of it. Also, just the experience of being a student-athlete has helped with my development as a person, overall. Football has given me a lot of things back like discipline, time-management and leadership skills that I couldn’t attain as a regular student.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite ‘on the field’ memory?
WB: Favorite on the field memory has to be the UNC game last year. Obviously people remember it, but I was one of the guys that grabbed the bell right after the game. We really just wanted to grab that and there are a lot of pictures of me with the guys ringing it on the field. Sharing that experience with some of my buddies that were in the stands, as well, is something I’ll never forget.
GoDuke.com: What is your favorite ‘off the field’ memory?
WB: Coach Cut’s Thursday night talks. It’s a players-only meeting and he shares a lot of life lessons, and something I’ve taken a lot away from. I’ve read Tuesdays with Morrie and I’ve kind of translated that into Thursday Nights with Cut. He really has given me morals and lessons I’ll take with me for the rest of my life.
GoDuke.com: Name three words to describe Coach Cutcliffe.
WB: Dedicated. He’s always on. You’ll never catch him in an off moment. Intelligent. Sitting down with him, he knows everything. He says he has a major in knowoledgy. He’ll rattle off a million facts about the most random thing. Leader. He has a ton of things going on, off and on the field, but he really knows how to motivate us and other people around him.
GoDuke.com: Name three of your favorite restaurants.
WB: Dane’s, Chipotle and Jimmy Johns.
GoDuke.com: Name three people you would have dinner with if you could.
WB: I would have dinner with Jamie Diamond, the CEO of JP Morgan. That’s where I’m going to be working next year, so I’d love to sit down with him and rack his brain. Ronald Reagan. He was a great leader, a great president and a great orator. He is someone I look up to, from a leadership perspective. The last person would be Abraham Lincoln, keeping in the president theme there. He came up in an interesting time and I’d like to talk to him about what he did as a leader as well, going through that controversy.
