DURHAM, N.C. – Three Blue Devils – Tanner Anderson (men’s track and field), Juliet Bottorff (women’s cross country, track and field) and Perry Simmons (football) – have been awarded funding for post-graduate education by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee.

The award provides each individual with a one-time gift of $7,500 for continuing education. The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women, doled out each sports season (fall, winter and spring).

The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship was created in 1964 to promote and encourage postgraduate education by rewarding the Association's most accomplished student-athletes through their participation in NCAA championship and/or emerging sports. Athletics and academic achievements, as well as campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership, are evaluated.

During his time at Duke, Anderson became one of the most decorated high jumpers in school history, opening his collegiate career by eclipsing the seven-foot barrier in his first meet donning a Duke uniform. The Valdese, N.C., native concluded a stellar freshman campaign by claiming the IC4A championship title. Duke’s school record holder in both the indoor and outdoor high jump, Anderson has garnered numerous conference honors, including outdoor All-ACC accolades twice and indoor All-ACC distinction once. Anderson, a biology major, proved equally successful in the classroom. A four-time All-ACC academic honoree, Anderson was also selected for the Weaver-James-Corrigan Award, a postgraduate scholarship presented by the ACC for student-athletes who have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while also contributing in the community.

Bottorff, a product of Newark, Del., excelled in both her academic and athletic endeavors while at Duke. A two-time ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Bottorff received myriad academic accolades, including four All-ACC academic team honors in cross country, four All-ACC academic team in outdoor track and field and three All-ACC academic team in indoor track and field. As a neuroscience major, Bottorff joined Anderson in receiving the Weaver-James-Corrigan Award. Bottorff prospered in competition, as well. Duke’s school record holder in the indoor 5,000 and the outdoor 10,000, Bottorff has won the conference title in both events, most recently becoming the first woman from Duke to win the 10,000-meter at the ACC meet. Bottorff was also named an Outdoor First Team All-America recipient in 2011 and an Indoor First Team All-America honoree in 2013 and 2014.In cross country, Bottorff qualified for the national championship each of her four years, earning All-America honors in 2012 and 2013.

Simmons was among the most decorated football student-athletes in the nation as a senior, receiving citations for National Football Foundation (NFF) Scholar-Athlete honors, Academic All-America first team and NFF Hampshire Honor Society as well as the ACC’s prestigious Jim Tatum Award for the conference’s top football student-athlete. A native of Raleigh, N.C., and a four-year starter at offensive tackle for Duke, Simmons started 50 consecutive games during his career and helped lead Duke to back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time in school history. A civil engineering major, Simmons is a four-time member of the ACC Academic Honor Roll and four-time selection to the All-ACC Academic Football Team.
