DURHAM -- This week’s Duke Football Summer Spotlight features All-American kick returner and starting safety DeVon Edwards. Edwards, a redshirt sophomore, was among the top return men in the nation in 2013, ranking third nationally with 30.2 yards per kickoff return and tied for second with two return touchdowns. Edwards was equally as valuable on the defensive end, logging 64 tackles, a half tackle for loss, three interceptions and six pass breakups.
The highlight of Edwards’ season came in Duke’s 38-20 win against NC State when he scored three touchdowns, including two on back-to-back interception returns in a span of 16 seconds in the closing minutes of the game. He also returned a kickoff 100 yards for a go-ahead score in the third quarter. His second return touchdown against went for 99 yards against North Carolina at the end of the second half in an eventual 27-25 win that locked up the ACC Coastal Division title.
Duke returns 44 letterwinners (20 offense; 21 defense; three special teams) and 17 starters (eight offense; six defense, three special teams) from a squad that went 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the ACC while reaching the Chick-fil-A Bowl a year ago.
